BG wants to introduce Free Power Saturdays

1 August 2013

Like a kid in the playground who realises that everybody hates him and he needs to do something nice or be forever excluded, British Gas is now planning to offer Free Power Saturdays.

The PR move comes after yesterday’s news that Centrica made a huge profit, but couldn’t rule out price rises. In order to stop millions of customers rampaging to their HQ with flaming pitchforks, BG is attempting to mask its greed by encouraging us to use as much energy as we want on Saturday for free. The plan is to raise household energy use on days when commercial use is lower. Other ideas for new tariffs include halving the price of gas and electricity on weekends.

To do any of this, though, you’ll need a smart meter fitted, which will be an enormous pain in the arse to co-ordinate and could be so costly it'll probably mean they’ll raise their prices anyway.

Wouldn’t it be much more sensible to freeze prices over winter instead of offering us all a thrilling Saturday bonanza of hoovering, washing, drying and ironing?

On a brighter note, 'Free Power Saturday' is a great name for a band.

British Gas customers are doddery old biddies who think it must the best because it has 'British' in the name anyway. Everyone else has cottoned on to fact everyone else is cheaper.

"Wouldn’t it be much more sensible to freeze prices over winter instead of offering us all a thrilling Saturday bonanza of hoovering, washing, drying and ironing?" Not that I'd want to imply that they're not a bunch of profiteering goits, but this does completely miss the point of why they're considering offering free leccy at the weekend. "The idea is to encourage them to use more of their electricity at the weekend when there is less demand from businesses, according to the BBC's industry correspondent John Moylan ."

You think THEY will be paying for the smart meters? Of course they won't. Plus if you're stupid enough to actually want a smart meter then you won't realise they're two-way devices, and Bombay Gas can switch your supply off at will.

If they can afford to halve prices it shows how much they are overcharging the rest of the time. Bunch of ****s the lot of them.

If you have solar panels to generate electricity that gets fed back into the grid, it may be worth getting some huge halogen lights, fitting them to your roof and putting them on a timer so that they come on a midnight friday and turn off midnight saturday. You could use that free electricity to generate light for the solar panels and convert about 3% of it back into electricity and feed it back into the grid and get paid for it. Fuck the environment and the neighbours, think about your wallet.

'Wouldn’t it be much more sensible to freeze prices over winter instead ' Yeah drop prices when they make most money from usage. What a great idea.

'Yeah drop prices when they make most money from usage. What a great idea.' yes but they can drop the prices as plants will be operating most efficiently (i.e not stop start) and quantity sold would still mean more revenue than the rest of the year. If free Saturday comes about I'll be buying shares in lead battery manufacturers just beforehand.
