Which! household appliance is most likely to kill you?

18 September 2013

If you’ve ever wondered what the most lethal appliance in your house is, wonder no more. Which! have compiled a list! Will your life be ended at the melting plug of your iron? Is your sizzling phone charger plotting your demise?

Well, turns out that your washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher are the leading causes of house fires. 14% of fires were caused by faulty washing machines, compared to 8% caused by ovens and just 1% caused by irons. According to government data, faulty household appliances are responsible for 3700 fires in the UK every year.

Of course, you’ll be wanting to know which brands are going to engulf you and your family in flames. Which! say a larger number of fires are caused by Candy and Hoover appliances than other brands. Also, if you’ve got a Hotpoint DWF3 dishwasher, you might want to invest in a fire extinguisher and an extra smoke alarm. Don’t be too worried, though. Hotpoint issued a safety notice on their dishwashers last year, but say the fire risk is very low. But is it a risk you want to take?

No Which! story would be complete without a quote from executive director Richard Lloyd, who said:

‘It’s shocking that everyday household appliances can pose such a danger. People’s safety must be the priority, so manufacturers should act fast to recall products as soon as they realise they’re faulty.
We want the Government and manufacturers to do more to analyse and release the data they collect on appliance fires to help reduce the thousands of fires that are caused by faulty products.’

Don’t have nightmares.

Faulty appliances or ones that are not maintained and installed correctly? I remember reading about an old couple's tumble drier starting a fire, as they had never cleared the filters.

    They have filters?!!?

Any idea how the stats were compiled? Basic numbers or percentage of fires with percentage of UK sales, i.e. are Hoover and Candy the top two selling brands in the UK?

Apart from the fact that the Which story is bollocks, 52% of fires are caused by cooking appliances and only 13% by ‘other’ electrical appliances using the latest published statistics – www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/36467/FSGB_2011_to_12.pdf

Incidentally the Fire Brigade attended 4700 instances of and I quote "Removal of objects from bodies", surely a much more interesting story

Other half's flat burnt down 5 years ago thanks to a Hotpoint washing machine. We also have to avoid Indesit (same people). Whirlpool get a thumbs up. Their fridge freezer survived the inferno intact. The food was still frozen inside!
