Behold, the UK's largest ever 'Fatberg'...

6 August 2013

county-clean-fatberg-image South West London rats are being incredibly inconvenienced at the moment, thanks to the existence of a 15 tonne lump of fat, which has been discovered in the drains in Kingston.

Thames Water (under whose jurisdiction it falls) are calling it the FATBERG, and say that it is the size of bus, and the largest ever found in this so-called ‘country’ of ours.

Gordon Hailwood, waste contracts supervisor for Thames Water said (with a hint of relish in our opinion): ‘While we've removed greater volumes of fat from under central London in the past, we've never seen a single, congealed lump of lard this big clogging our sewers before.

‘The sewer was almost completely clogged with over 15 tonnes of fat. If we hadn’t discovered it in time, raw sewage could have started spurting out of manholes across the whole of Kingston. It was so big it damaged the sewer and repairs will take up to six weeks.’

Thames Water has started repairs to 20 metres of damaged pipe this week, with work expected to last up to six weeks. We imagine they’re chopping away at the fatberg with axes and chainsaws and suchlike. Imagine getting in among that. Beautiful...

    Begs the question why haven't Thames Water checked the sewer over the last 10 years or so? Presumably this didn't form overnight.

    Should let it be... raw sewage could have started spurting out of manholes across the whole of that not a shit hole already....

    @Alexis: 10 years? More like 10 months.

    The fat is from all of the cheap fast-food restaurants, kebab houses, indian takeaways, Chicken Cottage and fish 'n' chip shops in Kingston. The restaurant owners are too tight to pay to have their used cooking fat properly disposed of, and so they chuck it down the drain at night. Then of course it solidifies as soon as it touches the cold pipes.

    There's now guys that'll take it away for free to make fuel for cabs, no reason this should happen again (hah, right)
