Is this racist? No. 1: The yellow skin passport rejection letter

2 June 2010

Welcome to our new, irregular game, ‘Is This Racist?’ – today we’re featuring a returned passport application that was sent to the US of America’s National Passport Service.

The man in the enclosed photo, a Mr Li, was told that his picture wouldn’t be suitable for a passport because he was ‘too yellow.’ So is that racist or not?

Maybe it’s not only racist, but also opens up possible avenues of discrimination against jaundice-sufferers, people with liver failure and residents of Springfield.

So, is it lacist? Sorry, we meant racist. Is it racist?

I'd be more upset that they didn't fully justify the letter. disgraceful.

Is his skin actually that colour? I doubt it. It's down to poor lighting. Although if anything like UK passports, by the time they print it in your passport, then the colours will be rather washed out anyway.

Lacist? No it isn't racist, but Mr Dawson you are...

Absolutely shocking letter that. People should lose jobs.

I can't see anything wrong with that letter. Excuse my innocence, but that picture is too yellow. He's obviously photoshopped it or the like because the "white" background is now red. I'm sure this is just a faux pas by the person who wrote the letter who wrote it in all innocence. This is another peice of non-news.

The colour balance is clearly wrong - I doubt the subject is wearing a pink shirt and standing against a pink wall. But someone at the US DoS is going to have to rewrite the boilerplate - it's wide open to anyone who wants to wilfully misconstrue it and take offence. I'm amazed it took this long for them to get caught out.

Is the phrase "to the bottom of the chin" racist when writing to a Chinese chap?

The thing about this is, either he's not actually that yellow and therefore should not take offence. Or he's very ill and will be dead before he'll be able to travel anywhere anyway.

It so obivous its the lighting issue he sat too close and its a little silly to reject an application because of that, i mean you can see his face anyway
  • Jonasse
Anyone who considers this racist is a racist (and a twat)
  • Nobby
I don't know why they bother with photos for people of Chinese anyway. They all look the same.

    You Raff, you Ruse!

I was actually told I was too white once when sitting for a passport photo. The guy taking the photo scrounged up a sweater for me so there'd be some contrast between my pale skin, white shirt, and the white background.

    wax on, wax off

  • Nobby

I know what rejection from the passport office is, I have been rejection totlaing thre times. I'm American born person who has been rejected because of a small detail. I have send proof of my age (62) and plenty of information, but still the same old crap. Rejection. Yes I feel the Ferderal Government is doing many americans wrong, but we can't do a dame thing about it. What makes this worest is alot of the people working for our American Governmet Passpot Office wre not born in America. Is that Justice.
