easyJet's "emergency" text service - will it save the day?
Despite the imminent cut in VAT and a glut of sales across the high street, the working class still aren't buying up castles and gorging themselves sick on foie gras. The airline industry is already working to wafer thin margins; the budget boys charge for luggage, meals and priority boarding (we'll come back to that in a moment), so how can they tease a little more money from the pockets of the great unwashed?
EasyJet have introduced a new text service to passengers that for the most part appears entirely superfluous, but may (or may not) prove invaluable. The basic package costs £3 and texts your booking reference, flight schedule and reminders (in case you somehow forget you're going on holiday) as well as daily weather reports for you destination - widely available for free across the web.
The premium package at £6.95 may cost half as much as your flight; it includes the same "features" as the basic package, as well as "unlimited destination assistance in case of an emergency - if you need help with the language, or if you just need some local information." EasyJet's definition of an "emergency" seems somewhat at odds with what most holidaymakers would consider an emergency while abroad. Oh, and back to priority boarding; our advice is that unless you're familiar with the flight, don't do it and save yourself a few quid. Several airports have to bus passengers from the terminal to the plane, meaning those priority passengers board the shuttle bus first, not the flight - rendering the priority boarding worthless.
