Commercial Break: Hell's bells - not sure what a car accident is like? You will be.

We’re not actively looking to bum you all out first thing in the morning, but if you’ve been wondering where you could see a mind-mangling montage of mocked-up motor accidents (as well as reading some frankly unnecessary alliteration) you’ve come to the right place.

The Australians take pride in making their road safety public service announcements as graphic and gruesome as possible without actually going the whole hog and pumping out a snuff movie, and right now the Victoria Transport Accident Commission are sort of celebrating.

It’s 20 years since they adopted the hardcore approach to warning road users about the various behind-the-wheel perils inherent in irresponsible car action and they’ve put together this compilation of their um, greatest hits from the past two decades, backed by the sound of ‘Everything Hurts’ by REM.

The first minute is a bit slow but then it turns into a rollercoaster of blood and thunder. Parts of it will have you saying ‘what the fuckity-fuck is THIS?’ and parts of it will literally churn your stomach but if it gets inside your head and makes you drive that little bit more cautiously this Christmas then it’s done its job.

Please don’t watch it if you’re slightly delicate of mind and soul – you’re probably not the target audience anyway.

Couldn't really focus on it. I think I'm still a bit drunk from last night. Thanks for posting it though. I like watching videos on my phone. It makes the drive to work fly by.

"'Everything Hurts' by REM" I can't listen to it as I'm on a training course at the mo but isn't it everybody hurts? Or has Micheal Stipe been in a bad accident and broken every bone in his body?

What a really powerful advert. Far better than the ones we have over here which are far too short and drill the point home far too directly. At least this had a narrative and will make our goldfish memory society take note. If it can save one life, its worth it.

Thanks this excellent wake up ad should be on every UK television channel every night to the new year !

For those who hate that fucking REM track, here's my version:

Better than the Faces of Death pieces our drivers' ed teacher used to show to the class in high school in the early 80s, Well, until one girl puked. After that all he got was permission for all the DUI wrecks to do a pittstop on school grounds for us to stare at before/after class while he recounted the accident report. Man was a ghoul. Don't know if it did anything either, that's the saddest.

What do you think?
