Bargain Booze Is Best Bar None For Russians

25 November 2008

Proof that the credit crunch is both global and bitter – skint Russians are deserting vodka in their droves. Reports suggest that factories are producing vodka faster than thirsty Russians can drink it and stockpiles of the stuff are growing rapidly.

Tellingly, deaths from alcohol poisoning are on the rise - 1,458 in September as brassic booze fans turn to bootlegged alternatives as a cheaper way to get their fix.

But they’re not lacking in imagination and are happy to sup anything containing alcohol. Cosmetics, perfume and cleaning agents don’t quite taste the same as vodka, but they’re cheaper and they get the job done.
