YouView - the wonderchild of Freeview and OD
We've talked about Project Canvas in the past, a new television delivery system supported by major telecommunication players, including the BBC, ITV, BT, Talk Talk and others besides.
Today the product was officially unveiled as YouView, and is likely to become available from early next year.
YouView will essentially be a Freeview box with a broadband connection, meaning it will deliver digital TV channels along with On Demand services - BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD, SeeSaw and so on - as well as pay-TV channels and the ability to record, rewind and pause live television. No subscription or pay plans will be required - you only need to buy the YouView box when it becomes available next year.
One more reason YouViews is going about business differently - it's an open platform for developers. YouView wants their product to be supported by applications that can bring more content to the end user - which means anything from radio stations to social networks, YouTube and, we imagine, yankee doodle.
