The crushingly lonely are getting scammed on dating websites
Are you lonely? Keep noticing how wide your bed is? Keep listening to maudlin pop records and wishing you were dead?
Fear not! That's because there's always dating websites to keep the razors from your wrists! Those places are filled with people in the same, loveless, jaded, completely lacking in social skills problems as you... right?
See, dating sites are becoming a magnet for con-men who want to prey on your weary little heart and trick the money from your pocket and PINs from your cards!
A study says that as many as 200,000 people may have been persuaded last year to give money to fraudsters who have used false identities to conduct relationships with crying onanists.
Marvellously, these crooked Casanovas have been given the name of ‘rom cons’, and they're so good at swindling people that some have committed suicide from their actions. An excellent way of not getting shopped into the police.
The study’s author, Professor Monica Whitty, said: "Our data confirms law enforcement suspicions that this is an under-reported crime, and thus more serious than first thought."
"This is a concern not solely because people are losing large sums of money to these criminals, but also because of the psychological impact experienced by victims. It may be the shame and upset experienced by the victims deters them from reporting the crime. We believe new methods of reporting the crime are needed."
