Tesco rolls out more free WiFi to stores

5 December 2011

tesco NEWTesco’s free Wi-Fi service has been rolled out nationwide after a successful in-store trial. So, any of you shopping in any of the Tesco Extra stores will now have access to free, unlimited WiFi access by signing up with your Clubcard number.

Take in your laptop, illegally download a load of stuff and Tesco will be the one getting in trouble, not you. Right? Obviously, that was a joke and we don't (we do) advise you partake in that sort of thing. Okay lawyers?

If you don't have a Clubcard, you get 15 minutes free every 24 hours.

Mike McNamara, chief information officer at Tesco, said: “We’re proud to be the first UK supermarket to offer nationwide access to free Wi-Fi. People are increasingly using a variety of digital services and we’re excited by our customers’ reaction to the new service.”

During a recent customer survey, 82% said they would definitely use the service again, while all found it “easy to use.” Other customers said it was “an excellent idea,” and “great for finding product locations in-store on the Tesco app.”

Excellent for seeing if you can get cheaper shopping elsewhere, presumably?

They may have free wifi but if you go into their cafes, you're charged for butter on your toast, the cheapskates!#bitterafterrecentexperience

"Excellent for seeing if you can get cheaper shopping elsewhere, presumably?" i thought tesco were known for chasing you out of the store for taking photos and noting down prices... i bet they'll be monitoring what you're looking at online for the same reason!

"Take in your laptop, illegally download a load of stuff and Tesco will be the one getting in trouble, not you. " I'm assuming that you sign in with your clubcard number so they can trace what you're actually doing on their wifi?

And no-one has clubcards in false names, do they? I've got loads, from the days they did £15 off your first online shop and allowed you to get £10 worth of points at the same time.

They say use the Tesco app to find location of items. well the app is a waste of time i wanted to find the location of where the jam was so i looked it up on the app it said it was in isle 7 but when i got to that isle it was the confectionary and chocolate isle. the jam was the other end of the store.

@Tim: Maybe part of the problem was that you were going offshore? @Touchwood: #hashtagsdon'tworkinforumsbutimgoingtomakethelongestoneeverjustbecauseicanandnobodywillevencare.

Nice, now I don't need to wait to get home when I run out of Kleenex, I can just thrash one off in isle 6.

most of the cafes are run by out side contractors

Useful for stores where the 3G coverage tends to die.
