Sony makes PlayStation 4 announcement and no-one knows what to make of it!
Some of us stayed up late last night to see what Sony had to say about their imminent new console, the PlayStation 4/PS4 and... well... it's a mixed bag to be honest.
For starters, the inside of the thing is ostensibly a PC with a hard-drive and all that, and the GPU, which according to Sony can "generate 1.84 Teraflops of processing power".
The biggest headline however, is the new controller. The PS4, after losing money on the last DualShock controller (the greatest, most robust controller in yonks) thanks to licensing of the rumble-pack inside it, they've decided to build their own, which looks like the joypad we all know, but comes with a new touchpad and motion-control technology.
Regarding the latter, the sad news is that Sony's 'Move' is back, which no-one wanted because a) Games are supposed to be played with joypads and nothing else and b) No-one has a house big enough for the Xbox Kinect, so why on Earth would anyone want to copy that?
The other big thing is the social element, with Sony wanting you to share how awful you are at video games with everyone (you can now livestream your games with pals, so they can help you with tricky bits of games and presumably taunt you through a headset) as well as a system that will enable Android phone and tablet owners to use their devices to act as a second screen, as seen with the Wii U. The idea is that Sony want to bring the online community closer to video gaming, which, if you enjoy the solitary element of gaming, this will be dreadful news. However, if you're 12, this will invariably sound like a dream come true!
Great news is that the PS4, unlike the new Xbox, WILL play secondhand games! However, PS3 games will not work on the new console, but will be able to be streamed (that goes for PS1 and PS2 games too). Is it a huge leap forward like previous outings? It doesn't look that way yet and there's still life in the PS3 too, so the response has been mixed.
It'll be out for Christmas too, naturally.
