Sony makes PlayStation 4 announcement and no-one knows what to make of it!

21 February 2013

Some of us stayed up late last night to see what Sony had to say about their imminent new console, the PlayStation 4/PS4 and... well... it's a mixed bag to be honest.

For starters, the inside of the thing is ostensibly a PC with a hard-drive and all that, and the GPU, which according to Sony can "generate 1.84 Teraflops of processing power".

The biggest headline however, is the new controller. The PS4, after losing money on the last DualShock controller (the greatest, most robust controller in yonks) thanks to licensing of the rumble-pack inside it, they've decided to build their own, which looks like the joypad we all know, but comes with a new touchpad and motion-control technology.

Regarding the latter, the sad news is that Sony's 'Move' is back, which no-one wanted because a) Games are supposed to be played with joypads and nothing else and b) No-one has a house big enough for the Xbox Kinect, so why on Earth would anyone want to copy that?

The other big thing is the social element, with Sony wanting you to share how awful you are at video games with everyone (you can now livestream your games with pals, so they can help you with tricky bits of games and presumably taunt you through a headset) as well as a system that will enable Android phone and tablet owners to use their devices to act as a second screen, as seen with the Wii U. The idea is that Sony want to bring the online community closer to video gaming, which, if you enjoy the solitary element of gaming, this will be dreadful news. However, if you're 12, this will invariably sound like a dream come true!

Great news is that the PS4, unlike the new Xbox, WILL play secondhand games! However, PS3 games will not work on the new console, but will be able to be streamed (that goes for PS1 and PS2 games too). Is it a huge leap forward like previous outings? It doesn't look that way yet and there's still life in the PS3 too, so the response has been mixed.

It'll be out for Christmas too, naturally.

ermmm.... Quote: Great news is that the PS4, unlike the new Xbox, WILL play secondhand games! Ps3 games can be streamed with 'enhancement's' think wii U virtual console or maybe can cross play on the Vita hopefully. ps2 and ps1 games to follow on streamed. the announcement was obscure but... "you will be able to tell when your friends have purchased a game instantly" could imply that games are only available in digital format...which would suggest no second hand games as they did not specify only games purchased through PSN.

Agree Luke, I think what Sony was basically saying is that the PS1, 2 and 3 catalogue will all be available for you to buy and stream from the cloud, so no you wont be able to use your current collection of those games without forking out some more cash (similar to Nintendo's policy) An annoying amount of marketing waffle trying to cover the truth, shame on you sony (not that microsoft will be any better but at least they will be open about trying to shaft you)

It just measn that the PS3 and Xbox 360 will last a lot longer than the sony and microsoft would hope. Why would anyone pay loads of money for a console that you can only buy games from online and not sell on when you have finished it/got bored? PC gaming is declining as you now have to register everything with water or ice or steam and then cannot sell the game very easily even if you thought you had bought a physical copy in a shop.

There's no doubt in my mind that this will be a great lump of kit able to deliver a stunning gaming platform; having said that and as history has proved in the past the new XBOX will outpace the Playstation 4. Call it what you like but this is the way of the world.

Did anyone notice the gameplay of Knack running off of a PS4 and streaming onto the Vita looked like shit? Still, have to say that I was impressed with Killzone Shadow Fall (needs an Adele-esque track to accompany that knock off title) and the footage of the new Capcom engine they'll be applying to their games. Those presentations truly lived up to the phrase 'next-gen'. However, I was deeply dissapointed with Watch Dogs. Basically Sleeping Dogs with a Deus Ex hacking gadget. And it ran like shit (Ubisoft confirmed it was running off of a PC at the time mind)

dunno sicknote, sony seems to be correcting all their earlier faults (PSN, Party chat, pad with triggers etc) and the biggest one that was briefly mentioned could be the game winner. If games are easy to be designed on ps4 they could be made for it and ported to the next xbox. current situation is games are made on 360 and ported to ps3 (which can cause glitches etc like Skyrim) and unless its a sony exclusive title (uncharted etc) the graphics were never really different for the most part. this could give them the global market rather than the predominant Japanese market at the mo.

"Great news is that the PS4, unlike the new Xbox, WILL play secondhand games!" - Microsoft have never said the next Xbox will not be able to play secondhand games - it's all just unconfirmed rumours for now! "The PS4, after losing money on the last DualShock controller (the greatest, most robust controller in yonks) thanks to licensing of the rumble-pack inside it, they’ve decided to build their own" 1) No chance did they lose money on the last DualShock controller - they didn't include it in the original PS3 controller (the Sixaxis) due to an ongoing lawsuit with Immersion. Once that was dealt with, they then brought out the Dualshock3 controller. 2) They've always built their own controllers 3) Greatest? In what reality? The triggers make your fingers slide off them and it is too small for an adult's hands. Also, the charge cable was ridiculously short.

Integrating with Android will be a huge boost to the Ps4.
