Skype: Translating you in real time

28 May 2014

Bitterwallet Skype iPhone app banned Microsoft have done a fancy thing with Skype, unveiling an automatic translator service for Skype that provides subtitles in real-time for a range of languages.

That means you can chat people up, abuse them and troll them, in a whole host of languages. You're about to go international kiddo!

"It is going to make sure you can communicate to anyone without language barriers," said CEO Satya Nadella.

This new feature will be launched as a test later this year for Windows 8.

However, one reporter who has tried the software out noted that, as a German speaker, the translation is “not so good” but “nice” overall.

Skype corporate vice president, Grudeep Pall, said: "It is early days for this technology, but the Star Trek vision for a Universal Translator isn't a galaxy away, and its potential is every bit as exciting as those Star Trek examples."
