PS4 to be affordable?

17 April 2013

Playstation-Buttons-300x187 Sony have been dropping rumours that the PlayStation 4 is going to be much more affordable than the price of the PS3 was when it launched in 2006.

Sony's Michael Denny said that the company wanted to "reach as broad a gaming audience as possible", adding: "I guess the first thing to say is that we listen and learn and take the judgement from every console launch we ever have and we have to be informed by what the strengths of our PlayStation 3 system have been, but also the challenges of that."

"We want a system that can reach as broad a gaming audience as possible but whilst being a system that's deep, connected, rich and immersive and is going to give a very focused and differentiated experience than anything else that's out there."

"We've got lots of information yet to give out on PlayStation 4. The initial announcement phase that we're in now is just to explain the vision to everybody.

"Part of that vision is we have created a console absolutely focused on gamers - and we want that to be gamers in the broadest sense as well. I think to some extent I can ask you to draw your own conclusions."

We already know that the PS4 will have a headset, a huge hardrive and controllers that will charge while the system is in standby mode. It also looks like Sony are learning some lessons from the failure of Nintendo's Wii U. But is their still too much life left in the PS3?

The P$4 will be expensive due to the 8GB of fast ram.

considering the pricing of the WiiU, you'll do well to get a bundle with 1 game for anything less than £399

The danger for me is how they treat current PS3 owners - specifically from the point of view of PS+. If they suddenly stop having PS3 games available in the IGC then they will lose a lot of goodwill, on the other hand - if the machine is reasonably priced and the downloaded games can be played on the PS4, then I would probably consider it a worthy upgrade, especially having a Vita. I wonder what will happen later down the line though and suddenly PS+ stops working on the PS3 - will Sony unlock all the games or will you have to buy them all, either full price or for a nominal amount? It is the sort of thing they should be telling us, but probably don't have an answer for as of yet. As for the Xbox - I'm less and less interested in it as I get more interested in the Sony machines. I have one, and I think Kinect is a waste of time - apart from Skyrim, it is almost exclusively for the kids now. The Wii U came in at too high a price, and is struggling to get shelf presence - a situation that will only get worse as the new consoles take over, with large areas for preowned PS3/360 games and consoles. Our local GAME has a stand dedicated to Steam for example, so Wii U needs a push as it is a great little console, but it (and the good games) are just too expensive!
