now owned by Rakuten of Japan

21 September 2011

playcomOne of the UK's most successful online retailers - - has been sold to Japan.

Of course, it hasn't been sold to the whole country of Japan, but rather, Japanese e-commerce operator Rakuten. They're going to hand over £25m for Play, which is a pretty penny you'll agree.

Hopefully, with continued growth around the globe, this will mean that us plebians will get better deals and bargains on music, books and electronics.

We'd better, or this is the most pointless news we've ever covered.

The chairman and chief executive Rakuten, Hiroshi Mikitani, said the takeover was an important one: "The UK market is one of Europe's largest and most mature e-commerce markets.

" is not only a pioneer in the market, but also one of the UK's most successful e-commerce businesses."

So there. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

Only £25M? Seems low to me. When floated back in 2000 wasn't it valued at something like £500M.

I would have thought Amazon would have paid £100m just to shut it down.

Play? Play? Remind me who they are again, are they they one's who started out as a really decent company with a great marketing model and then started selling everything in a very Woolworths tat fashion and have ended up with a website with a constant sale of garbage that no one wants?
