Light bulbs that last 20 years?! Have we reached paradise?

10 May 2012

lightbulbThree companies are all going toe-to-toe over a lightbulb that will last you TWENTY WHOLE YEARS! Christ. It's like Shangri-La or something. Everything mankind has ever achieved was building up to this exact moment! Surely there's nothing that could ever spoil this moment?

Well, these bulbs are going to be really expensive and will only last two decades if you only use them for around three hours a day. That's a fly in the ointment alright. A fly taking a massive dump in all of our ointments.

Either way, this long-lasting bulb will use LED to produce as much light as a 100-watt bulb and General Electric, Phillips and Sylvania are all looking at releasing them, possibly as soon as the end of this year.

"LEDs promise to be the way forward for the whole sector," said James Russill, the UK’s Energy Saving Trust's technical development manager. "There are so many benefits: they can be smaller, brighter; it is one of those rare technologies where the trial has shown it performs better than the lighting systems it is replacing but, at the same time, uses less energy."

"LEDs are the most efficient light source currently available, and are increasingly used in domestic, commercial and automotive applications. They can last tens of thousands of hours compared to 1,000 hours for typical incandescent lamps.”

Who needs hoverboards when we're being offered these?

If it's a slow news day you could always "break" the Brewdog/Diageo spat.

Bulbs will last 20+ years anyway. It's the constant switching on and off that 'fucks' them. There is a bulb in yankeeville somewhere that has been going for 110 years!

What they don't mention is these bulbs will cost around £30 each.

I can buy 4 bulbs a time off the fat bloke in the market for a quid. For the same money as 1 of these... I can buy 120 bulbs. Even if I replaced them every 3 months it'd still work out cheaper.

I'd rather watch foxes bumming at Downton fucking Abbey than read about lightbulbs.
