Free films for all! YouTube announce free movie service!
YouTube is going to launch a free movie (or, if you prefer, 'films') service after striking deals with studios including Sony Pictures and Blinkbox. Great eh? Free stuff for your eyes!
Of course, YouTube already shows a load of TV shows after having done deals with Channel 4 and the like, but this is the first foray into feature-length stuff and they will make more than 400 titles available for free and on-demand.
The new section can be found at www.youtube.com/movies and is offering classic films, Bollywood movies and, best of all, a load of horror films like Night of the Living Dead.
"This is one of many efforts to ensure that people can find all the different kinds of video they want to see, from bedroom vlogs and citizen journalism reports to full-length films and TV shows," said the YouTube head of video partnerships, Donagh O'Malley to The Guardian. "We hope film lovers enjoy the range of titles in this free library, whether catching up on a mainstream hit or delving into the vast archive of classic films from decades past."
The YouTube US film service launched this year with a mixture of free and paid-for content. It's likely that YouTube UK will be considering a similar move eventually.
