Asda join in the supermarket war and give away free money

17 October 2011

asda_logo_2 Asda are the latest ‘army’ to fire their ‘guns’ in the so-called ‘supermarket price war’ that is giving us all sleepless nights at the moment. They are claiming to have ‘slashed’ the prices of 3,000 products and are even giving away money to shoppers as well.

But hang on – it isn’t a war after all. A spokesman for Asda bullishly said: “Other stores don't want a price war, they only want a skirmish over price perception. There is no price war because no other stores showed up to win.” Woah – some big time talk there.

As well as the price cuts, Asda are offering a £5 ‘thank you’ voucher for every customer who spends £40 in store or online in the coming week, which can be used against your next £40 shop.

The move follows Tesco’s recent price cuts and Sainsbury’s price-matching voucher giveaway last week. Hopefully by Christmas week, the supermarkets will be offering us free fish pedicures while we shop as staff push us around the stores in specially-customised contraptions.

Tesco don't want a war, they don't even want customers, just tried buying a book from their site, it doesn't like my home or work address (bizarre as they've delivered to both before) and wants me to ring customer services. Get stuffed, I'll buy it elsewhere.

Wow Asda, £5 off a minimum £80 spend. I'll switch to you right away!

singhster... wouldnt that be a £75 spend? with a 5er off your next shop as well?
  • singhster
Negative Ian. If you spent £75, that would be £40 + £35. If you spent £35 you wouldn't be able to redeem the voucher. The minimum you'd be able to spend would be £40 + £40 (=£80) just to get a fiver off. It's a truly jizz offer.

Most people who do their shop in ASDA will spend over £40 a week. So just by continuing their shopping as normal they will get £25 (I think it was? Or maybe £20) off between now and Christmas. Plus this is in conjunction with the price guarantee so you get your shopping roughly 10% less than Tesco/Sainsbury/Morrisons plus another £5. Yes, I'm not going to go out and celebrate, but it's a perfectly decent offer.
