Could you live for three weeks without spending a penny?

20 February 2009

For plenty of people, life right now is nothing short of an arse. One of them is Bitterwallet reader Jamie Ryan (a person, not an arse). Due to be made redundant just days before he moves house, Jamie has found himself without a penny to his name. While he could borrow money to see him through to payday on March 13th, Jamie will instead attempt to get by without spending a drop of cash.

Armed with only a bus pass to take him to work, and with all of the bills paid for the next three weeks, Jamie is going to share his experiences of living without money on Twitter, posting regular updates about the hardships he faces and the solutions he finds.

Of course, you can't eat Twitter, so we're not sure how Jamie intends to feed himself for 21 days, but we're sure he'll think of something. "We can all find out together how easy or hard it is not to have any disposable income for nearly a month," says Jamie. "If I find it easy, hopefully it'll will encourage people not to rely on cash so much and save money in these harsh times."

Perhaps he'll go crazy and start eating people. We'll keep an eye on Jamie's progress over the next three weeks.

He lost his job.So does he take the bus to work to sob outside?

No, I could not live for three weeks without spending a penny. It's a necessary bodily function, and I doubt anyone else could manage it either.

Andy of yarm - he hasn't "lost his job" yet. He is "due to be made redundant just days before he moves house". I take it you're unfamiliar with the consultation process, etc...

He might NOT get made redundant, it's only a possibility and he's already moved house, to his parents where he's paid all he needs to until next month so he can still eat until then.

To be honest you could easily live for 3 weeks without spending a penny...i know i have enough food in to last me that long...the bills would just have to go on hold! However considering most of us come here from HUKD...then the answer is...NO.
  • Bazzaric
Why is he penniless? I don't get it. I can imagine him being skint AFTER he's lost his job and doesn't have a wage coming in?
  • Chris
His bus pass is paid for, all his bills have already been paid, and his parents are going to be feeding him. Quite frankly, there's not much more left to pay for anyway!

So no alcohol, no new games, no takeaway. Whats the point in being born in the first place.

I have been starving myself for the past 2 weeks just fun. I felt extemely hungry in the first day but hunger fade away later on. I havent felt hungry after that, but sometimes I do feel a pain in my stomach and I have to nibble something to prevent a stomach ulcer. I'm not anorexic, I dont hate food and I dont have any eating disorders. And I dont like KAte MOss either. It is just an experiment.

3 weeks without spending a penny? I think I'd piss myself after a day.
  • Andre
@Will Your bladder control has nothing to do with not spending any money! lol!

    @Andre Wooooooosshhh!!!!

Haha, won't work. Also, who is independently monitoring him? Anyone could lie about not spending a penny for three weeks whilst spending money daily.
  • Jimbob
I think he was trying to make a funny Chopper... guessing some people dont understand a joke for a joke...
  • Matt B.
@Chopper Yeah, that's roughly what it would sound like.
  • Kadok
I don't get why people think it can't be done? He has a bus pass to get to work and home and wherever else he needs to go, bills are all paid, food shopping is done and he stays with his parents who do the food shopping anyway! And also, he physically has no cash to spend!! In his circumstances, it's easily done. Agreed that there's no proof he hasn't spent any money though.

Surely he should stay off HUKD. I swear everytime I go on to HUKD I find something to buy...damn the site for posting such good deals.
  • Skeptikal
This is bullshit. I could quite easily go 3 weeks without spending, by paying in advance for stuff. Top my Oyster card up... in advance. Buy a load of food... in advance. Buy a load of DVDs and Games... in advance. Buy a load of gift cards for cinema and other places/shops/restaurants... in advance. Just like their bus pass, bills and mummy and daddy feeding them... a situation a lot of school kids have to deal with.

I managed to live with my parents for eighteen years and not spend a penny - three weeks? Pfffft!

I think if this person is used to spending cash on a daily basis they may find it harder. It also clearly says he could borrow money if he wanted to.
  • Stackattack
I'll give him a follow on twitter, im always looking for ways to stop spending money on unessential crap!

a right bunch of sympathetic bastards you guys are eh! This shit is happening to hundreds / thousands of folk in the uk and all you can say is " tough shit" shame on you all, you are petty and arrogant. People are struggling, have a fucking heart
  • septimuswigley
Pah, that's nothing. I'm attempting to spend the next three weeks not posting anything on Twitter. Should be fairly easy, due to the fact I'm not desperate for people to see how fulfilling (or not) my life is and therefore not signed up to the waste of time and energy in the first place.
  • steve
threre are over 1 in 6 of us on this planet living on less than a dollar a day consider yourself lucky idiot
  • imranmaz
We can all find out together how easy or hard it is not to have any disposable income for nearly a month the key word here is "disposable".... so no strippers and class A drugs. food, yes.
  • Jack
This will be interesting to see. He hasn't stocked up on food though has he? Are his cupboards bare when he started this or does he have exisiting bits? He needs to set up some site to go with his twitter updates for more information - he could even make some cash if lots of people started following and getting interested in this experiment. I'm not sure if he'll last 3 weeks, I think he'll break some rule into week 2 by mistake.
  • Peter
Hmm hes probally not spending a penny but spending a pound.
  • Slumdogging
So...why all the negativity? It's easy to sit at a computer and say you don't need cash for the next 3 weeks, not so easy in reality I would imagine. Give the lad a chance, maybe, just maybe, he will be doing this 100% legitimately and won't be cutting corners the way most seem to think he will.
  • SimbaK2K
The negativity is because he's realy not leaving on nothing at all. His bills are paid, his transport is paid, his meals are paid, he's just not spending money on disposable crap, surely what some people do all the time anyway? Heck I could do this every month, my bills all go out at the start of the month, my petrol can last 3 weeks and I'll just do the shopping at the start of the month!
  • magicbeans
errm its pretty easy if bills and food is sorted.... try doing it for a year or two and then maybe i will care

This feat is about as impressive as going three weeks without disembowelling an ocelot.
  • Colin S.
"threre are over 1 in 6 of us on this planet living on less than a dollar a day consider yourself lucky idiot" I think thats the point, he wants to see how difficult it is to be in the MINORITY and experience these conditions for himself. I wish i had the guts to try this but I like treating myself. calling him an idiot is a bit harsh imo. He's doing this for himself to see if HE and if people want to follow him they can. The negativity here is astounding,

Would you allow me to quote a paragraph or two from your post? I'm preparing to write project for college. Thanks very much!
