Cornetto do the 2011 Remembrance Day cock-up

11 November 2011

754001 Last year it was Lord Sir Alan Sugar and this year it’s Cornetto. What are we on about? We’re only on about the winner’s of the Remembrance Day Silence-Breaking In Social Media Award.

Tweleve months and a few hours ago, Sugar tweeted one of his millions of plugs for his book, leading to a wave of bile from the self-righteous Twitter hordes. Meanwhile, earlier today Cornetto cocked up big style by updating their Facebook page during the key 120 seconds of remembering, posting the message ‘Who’s got that Friday feeling?’ just as the UK was at its most sombre.

Cornetto’s Facebook ‘fans’ stopped being ‘fans’ after that, with one replying “Im having a its remembrance day feeling,” and another stating “Bad timing really ....Remember all the fallen heros.” Spelling and grammar aside, you can sort of see their point.

Cornetto subsequently tried to make with the nice, posting “Hi everyone – we’re so sorry about the timing and tone of our latest post. We are of course with the nation in remembering all of our fallen servicemen and servicewomen, and meant no disrespect.”

We’re unsure whether or not the later demonstrations by the EDL in London were fuelled by mass consumption of Cornettos. In fact, we’ve got no idea what they were all about – the whole poppy thing has gone beyond our comprehension.

If it's a choice between licking a Cornetto or licking a dead soldier ... Isn't twitting silent anyway?

Personally, I don't see why you have to remember during those two minutes. If you are quiet and respectful, then I don't see why you cannot go on and remember when you want to. I "remember" war dead most of the year - although they were all dead before I was born, so think about is more appropriate than remember. The only way a tweet can disturb you during two minutes of silence is if you are using twitter during that time.

Wasn't the update on Facebook, and not the internationally-recognised Twitter service. I always find Facebook disturbing.
