Spanish children's charity comes under fire for crap name
Police and trading standards officers have been investigating claims that charity collection bags being delivered to hundreds of homes in South West England, Wales and the Midlands are, in fact just a scam to extract money from the unsuspecting and the gullible.
The ingenuity and guile of the officers in the 'Scambusters' team must be highly praised- after all, who could have believed that the charity "Bernhardos" was not, in fact, a Spanish charity for disadvantaged children. Apparently, the alarm was raised after confused householders were at risk of mistaking the bags for those destined for an actual charitable organisation. Like say, I don't know, Barnado's, perhaps.
The company behind Berhardos, and the imaginatively branded 'Breast Cancer' bags, Sparco Ltd, is also being investigated under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, the Fraud Act 2006, the Companies Act 2006, the Trade Marks Act 1994 and the House to House Collections Act 1939.
