WH Smith equate gay lifestyle magazines to smut

5 September 2011

Walk into any WH Smith and feel free to browse through the pages of the likes of FHM, Zoo and Front. See, they're not proper filth - it's just lifestyle sex. People with their tops off and articles about things you can buy. However, if you're gay, don't be thinking that Attitude and GT will be there. That's because, obviously, the gays are evil.

gay magazines WH Smith

For some reason, gay lifestyle magazines, what with their people with no tops on and lifestyle articles and such, are hidden away from the eyes of the public. That's nice of WH Smith isn't it? What's their problem with the gay community?

*ring ring...* "Hello, W H Smith? The 1950's called, they want their mindset back."
  • PokeHerPete
Is this going to be a regular feature? Gay news?
  • oliverreed
Surprised they aren't on the bottom shelf so you have to bend over to pick them up....
  • Corrosive S.
I like that the caption on GT reads: "Hot, new and here!" I assume, by "here!", they mean, behind the counter, down the stairs, passed the leaky pipe (not a euphemism), through the locked door, in the broom cupboard.

Pete... I know you! Isn't your name PokeHimPete on a few sites I've visited??
  • Denny
The story falls apart when you see the magazine next to it, "Gay London", is clearly on view. Presumably because, unlike GT and Attitude, it doesn't feature a whole host of semi-naked people.
  • Muppet
Denny - The Sun has a topless woman on Page 3. As far as I remember a topless woman is classed as semi naked. So the story hardly falls apart.
  • Paul N.
I think that proves the point Denny (well the Zoo next over makes it stronger). Mof is saying FHM, Zoo feature plenty of "semi-naked people" yet they aren't hidden away by WHSmith.
  • Ross
How come the photo is so blurred - is it because twinkleboi didn't want people to see him looking at the gay area ?
  • Lyssie
Ross, with a handle like "twinkleboi" - "boi" being a term used in the LGBT community, I seriously doubt that twinkleboi was worried about that!
  • twinkleboi
to be perfectly honest i just moved the cover boards from zoo before i took the pic, its blurry coz a member of staff saw me and i had to dash! nothing like a little bit of controversy for Smiths!! :) x
  • Tom
    what's a 'boi'?
  • PokeHerPete
@Nick - Is that you "Hard" Nick??
  • Dick
When you lift up the card thing you need to take to the desk to get the fagmag, does the bender alert go off?
  • EarthSurvivor
That's exactly where it should be too. I hate today's moral society of "everything goes because it's 2011" and "everyone else is doing it so why shouldn't I". People need to grow up and find their morals. What next? Raping your neighbour and then say "shushh, it's 2011 - anything goes! Go back to your cave!" Disgusting attitudes.

I work for WHSmith and I can probably assure you that quite often certain magazines are targeted for shoplifting. I don't work at the Leamington branch, so I can't speak for the staff there. However, at the moment the company are having a crackdown on newspaper and magazine losses, especially in larger branches. In my store, we haven't gone to the extreme of putting out display cards to take to the counter, but we have needed to keep an eye on certain titles, and certain regular 'customers'. At the store I work in, this happens to be the Radio Times and FHM. So please don't say that Smiths is being homophobic, because Smiths are far from that & have really supported gay magazines like this from the off, even if they wouldn't sell in the beginning, they would push until gay people didn't feel embarassed to buy them anymore. As for EarthSurvivor, if you don't like modern society: why don't you lock yourself in to your home, stop looking at things like this on the Internet and ranting about things you have no idea about. Why don't YOU grow up and find your morals? Thank you. Society would appreciate you ceasing participation.

@adam: shoplifting? More like shirt lifting.

Oh dear. Some of the comments on here are neither funny nor drole. I know it's the bitterwallet but normally you can't get away with saying racist comments - why should homophobic ones be any different? As for WHSmiths being supportive - I acknowlege the fact that they brought gay magazines to the mainstream but why are they always on the top shelf? Why do they not sit lower down next to the quite explicit FHMs and Zoos. When I was a lad, I would buy FHM and Bizarre, and the gay quartile would be seated always on the topshelf in whatever branch of Smiths and I used to pity the gay person who would have to (unfairly) reach up ashamedly and grab a copy. Now taking a ticket to the counter is seemingly worse.
  • Lyssie
EarthSurvivor - your comment just shows how absolutely and totally ignorant you are. Rape /= sex. Raping someone is in no way equivalent to having CONSENSUAL homosexual sex with another person. This attempt at moral inflammation falls flat on the basis of this sheer ignorance.
  • EarthSurvivor
@Adam I am so glad I am not part of today's society. Unlike yourself Adam, I do not care if there is no room in Society for me. I do not care if I do not belong. That's what makes me stronger than most of humanity today. I hope that you could feel the same one day too. My morals have never changed you see. It's opinions like yours have which have grounded this country to it's knees. You probably think that it's okay to have gay scenes in Tourchwood, cause hey it's 2011 man, anything goes, far out dude! I bet you think it's okay to have sex education tv shows on Channel 4 at prime time too, with teenagers talking about anal sex and sex with dildos. "Cause hey it's 2011 man..go back into your cave if you don't like it" rubbish. Men have turned effeminate, husbands and wives roles have changed round, society has forgotten the true meaning of marriage, there are more screwed up kids than ever before, the sexulisation of children is on the ever increase, teen pregnancy is at an all time high, education is screwed up. Both men and women have lost their gender roles, basically the world is a mess. Nothing is taboo or shameful anymore. Morals don't exist anymore. The attitude that "since everyone else is doing it why shouldn't I" is more prevalent than ever. This world and our country will be in a messed up state for a long, long time.
  • Lyssie
@Tom - I could say, "Google it", but here you go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boi_(sexual_slang)
  • James
Although I'm neither one, I'd rather be a chic gay man who reads Attitude or GT than a moronic chav who reads Zoo, Nuts, etc.
  • EarthSurvivor
@Lyssie Sodomy is still a crime in parts of the world unlike here in the UK where anything goes. So I'm afraid it is you who is the ignorant one. Besides you miss the main point which is that as soon as one taboo becomes mainstream it opens up the doors for anything similar to try take a shot at becoming mainstream too, and the next and the next and so on. This snowball effect has continued to build strength and power to where we are today where we see prime-time tv programs watched by children showing gay sex scenes, same sex marriages, same sex couples being allowed to adopt children, same sex couples deciding to have gender transformation operations then decide to give natural birth! What a sorry, sorry state.

@ EarthSurvivor Half of your "criticisms of 2011" have nothing to do with gay tolerance like sexualisation of children, teen pregnancy and quality of education so I am not really sure why you are bringing that up. Yes society today has problems, society always has problems and while we have fixed lots of problems we have lots of new ones too. Anyway, the teen pregnancy rate has fallen significantly since 2001, so you are just making things up now. http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2011/feb/22/teenage-pregnancy-rates-england-wales-map#data I guess you are one of the people who just wants to believe the world is a worse place than it really is. Hey maybe those sex education shows you despise so much helped to reduce this? No, you couldn't possibly entertain that thought could you? I know improved family cohesion? No you don't believe that exists. Ah well it must be God. Shame he didn't get to work on the teen pregnancy rate in 2001. Clearly you believe that gay people should either just stop being gay or they should do it behind close doors and never talk about it. And yes, society has for the most part decided that we should accept gay people. Clearly you have not. You are in the minority, we simply do not believe that homosexuality is immoral. It is not that we have come to accept immoral things. Also no-one says "far out dude" anymore
  • EarthSurvivor
@ james Dewitt In response to your stats, the figures show there 'was' a drop of around 3000 underage pregnancys from 2001 to 2009. 2000! I wouldn't call 7% "significant" ! Besides that data is out of date by 3 years! So you are 100% correct I couldn't possible entertain the thought that the sex education shows on tv at present have anything to do with the results from 3 years ago. Also those stats show underage pregnancy has gone UP, not down in many places. Like a lot of today's society, I believe your intensions are well meant, but you have been misguided by the TV, Films, music, papers, the media and the government. So actually you 'have' come to accept immoral things, you simply don't realise it because everyone else around you has also.

Let's get back to the good old days! I for one want to get back to the highest of moral standards that the british once had! Slavery! It's what God wants. It's moral 'cos the bible says so. Racism - Those foreign bastards have destroyed our country and no mistake mate! Send them back to darkie-land or whatever. We should run theor countries for them like we used to. They can't even use their resources properly - we should have 'em. Child povery and pregnancy - let's get them teenage girls in the workshouses; that will stop them having kids (a couple of kicks to the lower abdomen once they start 'showin' usually does the trick boys) Prostitution - never used to happen before the TV stuff about pervs 'an all that. Paedophillia - The priests had a right back in the good old days; so did daddy - it's those bloody newspapers that have made it all go wrong. Keep it in the family I say. Today's society - pah! "You've never had it so bad." I had that Jesus in my cab yesterday. Lovely bloke but he was all "fogive this" an' "forgive that". Bloody faggot!
  • james D.
@ earth survivor Well I am sure I could find some stats from 2011 if I tried, but given that you are the one who stated teen pregnancy was at an all time high, maybe you should. I am pretty sure we would have heard about it in the news if teen pregnancy had skyrocketed again after all the gain made in the previous 10 years but its pretty clear that whilst in a few places of course the rate has gone up, overall teen pregnancy has been falling steadily since the beginning of the decade. Shouldn't you be happy about that rather than refuse to accept it is true? 7% is a decent gain, not massive no but certainly a lot better. As for me coming to accept immoral things. I was in fact raised by a religious father who believed and still believes that homosexuality is wrong. However I rejected this due to meeting and interacting with gay people and I do not believe they are bad people and should be allowed to live as they choose. If we are going to make sweeping assumptions about each other I believe you have been mis-guided into an intolerant position regarding homosexuality by your right wing religious peers.

Ah Boris! The lone sane voice in a world of madness. I'll vote you in again come Mayor re-election time. And I say this as a one legged, black lesbian who thinks the Daily Mail has it spot on.
  • Tom
thanks Lysine but I fear I'm none the wiser. I must be more parochial than I thought.
  • The B.
@Paul Coia - You neglected to mention that Bizarre is now found on the top shelf of most Smiths (but then so is SFX), which is odd because it's not worth reading any more, it's turned into FHM. @Earth Survivor - Wow, you seem to have mistaken the BW blog for the Daily Mail comments section, what an enlightened view you have of the world, do you still use candles because "that there lectrickery is magic and 'gainst Gads will"?
  • joanne f.
so its alright to show woman with virtually nothing on except "stars" to cover their nipples, legs spread eagle, full view of children of all ages and most shops, but half naked men. O.M.G. blue movie material. "children dont look its half naked men - pure filth". personally cover all "those" magazines up - not quite top shelf - mmm why? leave the half naked men though cos there hot - i dont think so. stand up for decency and respect.
  • Shooter M.
What a bunch of wishy washy liberals.
  • Dick
Lesbians can look at titty mags. Therefore WHS are not anti-gay, since they make them easy to reach. Especailly for little fat lezzars.
  • Joe
SO many homophobic comments on here.. Editorial control? Don't think it's anything to do with WH smith being homophobic, more to do with shoplifting - but i think they're going about it in the wrong way. Boo to this blog and boo to whsmith
  • Shooter M.
@Joe: Are you suggesting that these shirtlifting shoplifters are lightfingered, as well as light on their loafers?
  • LarryGrayson
I think there is a suggestion that we arse baandits are also magazine bandits. Outrageous! (like my new waistcoat).
  • oliverreed
This thread is still going - 'mazin!
