The Sun+ membership - still taking your money?

22 October 2014

The_sun_logo Did you sign up to The Sun's Dream Team last summer when the football season started? Well, while you were dreaming about topping your work's fantasy league and gloating in the office, you may have missed something.

You may recall that, as part of the sign-up, you were obliged to take a trial for The Sun+ membership, which was free for two months.

Chances are, you forgot all about it, but The Sun didn't. And now they want money.

According to one avid Bitterwallet reader: "I cancelled back in August and I've been charged today. Having looked over Twitter... there is plenty of people being charged after cancellation. So, if you cancelled your Sun+ membership either in the last few weeks or right back in August, check your bank statements either now or in the next few days."

They also signed off with "Robbin' b******s!"

And indeed, there's a number of complaints on social media, with one Twitter user saying: "how do i cancel my sun Plus membership? I wasn't even expecting the money to come out... Won't be playing dreamteam again!!" and another adding "Thankyou to @TheSunNewspaper for luring me into a Sun Plus membership just for signing up for Dream team. No food for me next week. #sad"

If you signed-up to play Dream Team, you'd be advised to check your bank account, because there's a good chance there's going to be £7.99 missing from your account.

We'll look into the best ways of cancelling your Sun+ account, but in the meantime, contact your bank and make sure the payments stop and, if you're in the mood, call The Sun and give them what for at 020 7782 4000. Or, you can find their complaints page here to email them.

If you have anything to do with The Sun you deserve all you get.

Disgraceful from The Scum. Everyone just needs to boycott the piece of shit and see it for what it is - one huge money-spinning lie. I tried to cancel the day I took the "free trial" out and it wouldn't let me. I'm not even bothered about the £7.99 it's the huge sum of money that we would have paid collectively that makes me feel sick. This is the same paper that had FRONT PAGE news of "Boy, 3, Child of Satan" - he had a fucking hair dryer burn!

Utterly disgusting business model knowlingly extracting money out of people under false pretences. Has ultimately done me a favour cancelling my daily copy of The Times and weekend copies of the Sun and I have my money back within a week. Vermin

Stupidly signed up to read one of Katie Hopkins columns for a month free. Checked that it was easy to cancel online, which at the point of signing up, it was. When it came to cancellation time, there was no option to cancel online, it meant a phone call. On that phone call you will have to be really persistent, don't fall for any of the other offers you will be tempted with, just bluntly tell you want to CANCEL. Check after a day or so that you cannot gain access to your account and that it is closed. Its like dealing with Sky..........now I wonder why that is?!

If you're paying by Paypal go to Settings > pre-approved payments > News UK and Ireland ltd > Where it says account - active click 'cancel. If you pay by bank transfer /direct debit just cancel at the bank or your online account. Pretty sure the only reason you 'have' to phone them is so they can try the hard sell.

I've spent days emailing them about charging my account after canceled last week they've done it 3 times since then witch put me in over draft and caused me bank charges there attitude to using my bank details fraudulently after contract cancelled was tuff basic ly we caused your bank charges but we will do f all about it :/

Please cancel my sun + offer
  • Robert W.
I've just found them starting to take money from my account. This needs investigating! Same on them.
  • Wendy H.
Cancel it with online banking by deleting it from your direct debits. This is the only way to effectively cancel the legitimate scam.

they took money from sun plus and then refused me the toffs voucher stated in the terms and conditions..i sent over 10 emails, some replied to..promising the voucher would be with me in days..but it never came, no matter how many times i called or emailed.. the sun gave me promises on 5 different occasions, never gave me the voucher, but still took the money

I cancelled and said no to the magazine. My Bank Manager is on the Suns Case. The Sun is a total ripp off and I feel sorry for the people who read there rubbish news, all there good for is the Dream Team. Give my £71.91 back !!!

We rang up the Sun+ dedicated cancellation line, and requested to cancel. The assistant told us we could, and as there were a few days left, said to take advantage of the Perks before we left. They renewed the membership. and took the money. When we complained, they originally said we had agreed to continue. Then they said we had agreed to continue taking advantage of the Perks. Finally, they said that we "hadn't confirmed cancellation", even though we were using their dedicated cancellation line. We've now reported them to Trading Standards.
