Sky Follows BBC To Offer Online Pay TV Service

11 November 2008 giant Sky has announced plans to launch an online subscription service, allowing viewers to watch Sky channels, including Sky News and Sky Sports, via the internet.

Although no exact launch dates or details have been released, BSkyB’s chief operating officer Mike Darcey says that the service is expected to become available in the “next few months":

"Until now, Sky Player has been a 'bonus' for existing Sky customers. This will continue but in its new guise there will also be access on PC for a dedicated subscription service."

The online channels will be hosted on the SkyPlayer website, and the service will be available to all consumers, not just current SkyTV and Sky Broadband subscribers. City analysts predicting that Sky will fall short with this endeavour, but Darcey maintains that BSkyB will still hit its target of 10 million subscribers by 2010.
