Own a Flip? You're about to get the bird.
The Flipcam have been very popular over the past three years. Small, compact and so simple a surprised horse could use it. Easy to film, easy to share online - it's a gadget that owners love.
Not for much longer. Owners Cisco have this morning killed the Flipcam and its future, with a single sentence in a press release. The company is "restructuring its consumer business" which means the Flip will be no more.
There's very little detail given away, except to say that "Cisco will close down its Flip business and support current FlipShare customers and partners with a transition plan."
The Flipcam was launched in an age when smartphones were in their infancy, and the video captured by mobile handsets was of poor quality and difficult to extract. Yes, that age was only three years ago, but it's a sign of how quickly the consumer market is changing. That said, the Flipcam trailblazed from the moment it was launched - in its first year, the Flip took 13 percent of the camcorder market.
