In the stores now! - mmmm, Trisodium Phosphate

20 April 2009

"Tesco at Western Avenue in Cardiff are selling these Rustlers BBQ ribs at £1.59 each or 2 for £3.75, so you pay 57p more when you buy 2," screams an anonymous reader into his keyboard shortly before flinging it at [email protected] "The offer was previously 3 for £3.75."

Tish and pish. Even if it is 2 for £3.75, it's a fair price to pay. Just look at all the ingredients you get in a Rustlers Quarter Pounder with Cheese:

Beef Burger (45%), [Beef (75%), Beef Fat, Water, Textured Soya Protein (5%), Dextrose, Flavour Enhancer: Monosodium Glutamate, Salt, Sugar, Stabiliser: Triphosphates; Egg White Powder, Flavourings, Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein, Malt Extract, Yeast Extract, Colour: Ammonia Caramel], Sesame Seed Bun (42%), [Wheat Flour, Water, Vegetable Oil, Yeast, Sesame Seeds, Salt, Sugar, Emulsifiers: Mono- and Diacetyl Tartaric Acid Esters of Mono- and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids, Mono-and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids; Preservative: Calcium Propionate; Flour Treatment Agent: Ascorbic Acid], Processed Cheese (7%), [Cheese, Water, Whey Powder, Butter, Emulsifying Salts: Sodium Polyphosphate, Trisodium Phosphate; Milk Proteins, Calcium Phosphate, Colours: Beta Carotene, Paprika Extract], Tomato Ketchup (6%), [Tomato Paste, Glucose-Fructose Syrup, Vinegar, Modified Maize Starch, Salt, Sugar, Preservative: Potassium Sorbate; Herbs, Spices, Onion Extract, Flavouring]

You have to admit - all that lot, twice, for just £3.75 is quite the bargain.

Why not just drink bleach, it has roughly the same chemicals and nutritional content and it's cheaper.

It does say 3 for £3.75 in the small label, if you squint. So I reckon this would catch a lot of people out. They pick up two and pay 2x£1.59, instead of getting 3 for a little bit more.

Real Bob.... you have a pint of bleach i'll have 3 of these beauties and we'll see who has the worst indigestion. Trisodium Phosphate pah, its just a salt

“Trisodium Phosphate pah, its just a salt” Ammonium picrate is also a salt, wouldn’t want to chow down on it though, no more than I’d want to chow down on this, frankly, fake food.

It's never been a more true statement...... ....."you are what you eat....."
