GMTV slammed for sneaky Martin Lewis link-orgy

22 March 2010

martin-lewis_gal

That cosy early-morning TV shitfest sugarfest GMTV has had its knuckles rapped by Ofcom over its association with non-cape-wearing consumer superhero Martin Lewis.

During one of Lewis’ many appearances on GMTV’s Lorraine Kelly show, on January 14th, Lewis claimed that free gym passes were available to anyone who visited GMTV’s website, but due to some kind of administrative error, viewers were redirected to Lewis’ own Money Saving Expert website.

This has displeased the elders at Ofcom, who have deemed that "by inviting viewers to obtain further information and vouchers on the GMTV website, and then re-directing them to Martin Lewis's commercial website to obtain that information, the programme was effectively promoting his business."

That will be the same business that has unlimited status, meaning that there is no obligation for Lewis to declare via Companies House just how much money he is saving making.

Just saying, is all.

    @ BW Jealous much?

    Martin Lewis, what a cunt.
  • gym p.
Gym passes? Where was Ofcom when he directed millions to download his free template letter and take their bank to court and in the process most likely ruin their finances even further, or when he misdirected millions to pay more for capped energy contracts to avoid future price hikes then prices went down, or when he recommended Iceland's banks for safe savings?

    Martin lewis FTW

Love his site but he is an annoying dick.

@ F. Finger The admin of this place is worse Hi Paul :)

He has also never publicly denied that he killed disabled black children. Accusations made just now..by me. Just saying, is all.

What's the issue with not knowing how much he makes? Surely people are allowed to make money, and why should they tell the world. The only reason Company's have to file accounts is so that (potential) creditors can ascertain it's financial position which is more important if there is limited liability - that's the trade off for the protection of limited liability. If there is no limitd liability then where is the trade off and where is the need to know his financial position.

You could've written that without being so rude yourself Andy. At exactly what point did Martin do something wrong? You should be emphasizing GM.TV at fault instead misleading the page by putting a big picture of Martin on it. Ooh profanities makes good writing does it? You've just made yourself look stupid ha ha. Immature idiot.

Dont get me started on 'Martin Lewis' the consumer expert, what an absolute prat. Nobody gets that excited about work, its so false. He's constant way of writing is such drivel, I laughed out loud on his faq page that says he talks a salary from the sites earnings to help pay his wage and so gives him the 'motivation' to write. If I was earning millions each year through commission referrals for every product under the sun I'd have the motivation to write until my fingers bled. The constant rubbish about how the site is always for the consumer and has this as its top priority is laughable. The intention by constantly bringing out new MSE products is very clear. All to fund his multimillion pound bank balance. People forget how much money he makes from referrals, just like any comparison site. He's quickly getting a monopoly across the whole industry and rolling out all sorts of his own new comparison sites from which he makes all the money himself. They are running shed loads. Of course then he plugs his own services on the site. His site is basically now just a comparison site making a shit load of money with a forum tacked on. Very clever way making himself a multi millionaire and you cant blame him but all this 'its for the good of the consumer' is total BS. Primarily aim: make myself a fecking shit loada money!

@ Mikey - "Immature idiot", the irony. Name calling falls into that category. Good post Andy, had it been plain facts I'd have considered it a boring story. Thanks for jazzing it up :)

    > Very clever way making himself a multi millionaire and you cant blame him but all this ‘its for the good of the consumer’ is total BS. Primarily aim: make myself a fecking shit loada money! Personally I don't like Martin Lewis much either, but I don't believe there are any trult altruistic comparison or deals sites. HUKD is full of affiliate links too.
  • Brian
Hi, my name is Brian. I like Martin Lewis. He talks too fast for me to understand what he's saying, but i would gladly hold hands with him around the camp fire and sing Kumbayah. And my best wishes to Mrs Cameron and a safe pregnancy.
  • Crisp
As Nobby suggested before, a lot of the criticism is that he is making money by hosting a deal website... but surely HUKD does just as well, if not better? In fact, I read (though do not know if it's true) that HUKD have excluded certain companies for not giving them commission via afilate links, or something? Just saying, is all.
  • packaging456
@crisp But when was HUKD's last on the GMTV sofa or on the BBC? That's the point of Ofcom's ruling that moneysavingexpert.com is a commercial business like HUKD and was exploiting editorial to plug its business. What moneysavingexpert did left consumers with no protection whereas now it will have to take out adverts like every other commercial business to plug its website. Consumers following advice given in adverts will have a route to complain when things go wrong. What is odd about this ruling is Ofcom is concerned with harm to viewers. GMTV was flooded with callers over its bank charges campaign spearheaded by Lewis who directed viewers to subscribe to his email for free template letters. It all went wrong once the Supreme Court invalidated his legal argument leaving possibly hundreds of thousands with court costs, bank accounts closed, real harm that it is likely pushed some towards the point of suicide. Why Ofcom did not step in to stop that campaign but has ruled on vouchers is a mystery.
  • Sceptic
Noooooooooooooo...... did you have to link this one to HKUD? I've a theory that Martin is the David Koresh of the deals world and this is all part of a master plan to stage the worlds sickest love-in (appropriately sponsored, with cashback, and with free passes for DFWs). Think BW is about to become infested with 40 year old mothers of 8 (the type called "angelcutelove" or similar, and who post wank 5p off a can of coke at Tesco deals) flocking to defend their high priest. @Brian... "hold hands", "Kumbayah". I knew it!
  • Nigel
@Damien Croft - "Nobody gets that excited about work"... Have a look at some of Gary Vaynerchuk's videos. http://siteanalytics.compete.com/hotukdeals.com+moneysavingexpert.com/ - Looking at that graph I'd say HUKD still has some way to go before it gets the same traffic that MSE has.
  • angelcutelove
    Fucking leave him alone!
  • Mike U.
The man a legend, used one of his letter templates which got me back £5k from my bank in 7 weeks, best payday ever!!!

Martin's clever money saving ideas have saved me thousands of pounds over the years. If he makes a bit of money out of it himself then I have no problem with that. I somehow doubt he has millions of pounds swishing about in his bank account though.
  • shinkyshonky
    Damien Croft...fuck off you knob

  • Will
Calm down, calm down, it's only a gobby loans salesman raking in millions from free publicity handed out by ITV, the BBC TV and radio national newspapers and websites. That's all. Nothing to worry about at all. Or is there? shinkyshonky: "I somehow doubt he has millions of pounds swishing about in his bank account". On what do you base this assertion? He claims to have nearly ten million disciples following his every word. Let's say he makes 30 quid of each one, that's 30 mil for starters. You people don't get it.
  • screw y.
he's saved me a load more money than you guys at hukd
  • shinkyshonky
    will ....doncha get irony....wtf
  • Will
This is a great game. The truth is pointed out and then a thick person comes on and says how much money they have saved. Ok, thick people how much money have you really really honestly saved? Speill it out. Or is it really the case that you once got a half-price pizza with some chav mates, 13 Nectar points a gym membership you can't cancel, 14 credit cards some bank charges you'll never get back and a bankruptcy agreement?
  • Shirls
Anyone else wonder if Lewis owns a stake in the voucher sites he plugs?
  • JohnnyBoy
The only money website I've found where the owner appears more concerned about telling it how it is than making bucket loads of money is www.candidmoney.com. Found it very helpful, although as no price comparison or paid links not sure how it makes any money.
  • DaleTalks
Glad to think im not the only one that sees through the 'consumer comes first' rubbish. haha you're foolish not to think that mse is not making an absolute fortune for martin and his empire, they employ a lot of people and are the basically the same as any other comparison site. The new comparison engines they keep bringing out prove this. They have brought out various comparison sites for all sorts, flights, mobiles, even cd and music downloads with more coming along all the time. As well as making affiliate referrals like all the other sites. These new additions are obviously being brought out to make money, they aren't there to bring anything new to the public as similar and better comparison sites already exist. They keep reeling them out and plugging them on the site. Doesnt this tell you something? they arent there to feed the hungry or save the work...there to make dollar! of course yes its an excellent resource of info and saves unknowing people money but lets not have the blinkers on here people, its a business which makes countless millions each year. Just like moneysupermarket, hukd etc etc... Dont get me wrong I think its great site but Im not so blind to think it isn't primarily a business which makes a stupendous amount of money based on its massive audience and users. Of course in the early days it wasn't quite so obvious but it is now. Its certainly saved me a lot of money over the years and like hukd it's a win win for both the consumers and owners so good on em, bloody wish I'd thought of it first! ;)

@dale does it save people money though? if you didn't subscribe to the weekly email don't you think you would save more because the email is designed to make you shop? before restaurant vouchers did you ever think to eat out on monday night? doesn't going out on nights that you used to stay in cost you more even if you are paying half (inflated) price? we don't know how real his advice to take out credit cards for free flight vouchers or high street vouchers is. i suspect what happens to some is if they had thought about taking out a credit card they would have said no but presented with free flights even though they could probably pick up the equivalent for a tenner it persuades them to take out the card. they then spend on the card and start racking up interest charges far more than the value of the freebie which is how these things work. this is also how we are so in debt as a nation from spending on borrowings. martin's achilles heel is the fact that he is a PR for spending. he has to persuade people to spend or he does not make any money. take last week's urgent update on m&s 25% off website sale which was flashed as news. was this really stop press or was it his cut if he could persuade people to shop that he was excited about? m&s was selling off stuff it could not sell, the sort of sad rail you pass in store that has nothing from its collections, all the bits nobody ever wanted to buy on it. when you see those rails in store do you rush out and shout stop press urgent news flash sale rail inside? surely that is the affiliate link talking, that is martin making money from persuading people to take more and more risks with the amount they spend.
  • andyofyarm
Martin has saved me a few bob over the years. If he makes back on the affiliate links I,m happy to share the love. His weakness is in financial 'advice' (although he denies it).For example last year he hassled about selling Index Linked national savings just after the VAT cut. He's a typical rear view mirror investor. And of cource Icesave, what a dick.We will never see the money we gave to UK depositors owed by our cod shagging friends.
  • Alex
Wonder how long it's going to be before a real journalist starts digging into just how much money he's making. I've heard it's over £3million per year. No wonder he's scared about publishing his accounts and has taken his company private (or whatever you call it). PS. And yes, very smug and full of himself.
  • Ian
Martin Lewis's site without doubt is not what it makes out to be, MSE.com does not give the best deals out there in a number of areas & when this is pointed out to his guess what ALL your comments get deleated from his site. Face it MSE.com is a money making tool for Martin Lewis and in my opinion is not to be trusted at all.
  • Jeffreeeeeeeeeey
Martin Lewis on ITV-what a stupid, self loving cunt. Yesterdays`Money saving tip`? If you spend money on a sandwich and a Coke at work every lunchtime, don't and you will have around £35 by Christmas Eve....and also be malnourished?Fuckwit.
  • John
Martin Lewis is a parasite, who makes MILLIONS from hidden affiliate links all over his forum, and his forum visitors don't even realise it. His forum visitors think Martin Lewis is doing all this big-mouthing out of the kindness of his heart. Little do they know, that he makes MILLIONS out of their gullibility, and following him like sheep.
  • Ben
Martin Lewis has sunk to new lows by making himself chief cheer leader for the Coalition Student Loans policy. He'll happily encourage young people to take on tons of debt, so when they are desperate they will click on his links and he can carry on making millions. And being gullible and young they will do what he says and they will all be debt peons forever. The man makes me sick.

"His weakness is in financial ‘advice’ (although he denies it).For example last year he hassled about selling Index Linked national savings just after the VAT cut. He’s a typical rear view mirror investor. And of cource Icesave, what a dick.We will never see the money we gave to UK depositors owed by our cod shagging friends." OMG ain't that the truth. Another example, posters kept trying to post that there was going to be a House Price Crash in 2008 and their posts kept getting deleted. HPs fell 25% that winter and people using his site really got burnt. He has put news feeds on his site now but it is just to cover his sorry ass because most of the financial advice he gives out is so poor. And your so right about the rear view mirror. He hasn't got a clue about what is happening today , let alone tomorrow.
  • Ben
"@dale does it save people money though? if you didn’t subscribe to the weekly email don’t you think you would save more because the email is designed to make you shop? " OMG how true is that too. SPENDING ISN'T SAVING! Ever!

The man is also a charlatan. He makes out he has a degree in Economics by saying he went to the LSE when in fact his degree (whilst from the LSE ) was in Politics and Law and he has a masters in Journalism. He is also a jumped up little rich boy who went to a very posh private school in Chester. This is no people's champion.
  • una
@ben . Agree. The man went to a £11k pa private school (wiki) and has spent years encouraging students to get into debt - apparently it's "good debt" . Only a proper rich boy / toff/nob could think there was "good debt". Also, 30th sept 2011 MSE handed users' personal detailsover to the court. See Bloomberg for deatails, I can't post links. Put moneysavingexpert in the search box.
