Deathwatch - Powerplay Direct in administration?

5 January 2011

powerplay-directOh dear. HMV may be on a sticky wicket, but at least they're still managing to soldier on. It seems the same can't be said for entertainment retailer Powerplay Direct, however.

An avid Bitterwallet reader got in touch to say the website has been down for the past day, while a post on Interactive Investor points to closures of the company's high street stores:

The last remaining 'indie chain' Powerplay looks to have gone into administration. Back in July 2003, this South England-based music retailer bought four of the Andy's / Andy's Records stores (Lowestoft, Bedford, Hull and Lancaster) from the administrators. The company then purchased a further three (Hereford, Leicester and Worcester) in September 2003. Although Powerplay Worcester (my hometown) closed a while ago now, Powerplay still had a few high street stores including Leicester and Hereford. And they concentrated on online sales under the name Powerplay Direct.

I was in Hereford on Boxing Day with the family and went to the local HMV. The Powerplay store in Hereford is right opposite HMV but on Boxing Day was closed. I thought it a bit odd but put it down to them not being able to staff it on this bank holiday.

But I was in Hereford again today and it was all boarded up. It looks like they've gone into administration to me as their website is down too.

Powerplay seemed very bullish about trade in an interview with MCV in May last year, and deals were appearing on HUKD as recently as two days ago.

We've contact Powerplay Direct for a statement on the matter. The website doesn't confirm the company is in administration, but the developments noted above, plus news passed on to Bitterwallet that the company's affiliate links have been suddenly dropped by Webgains - all suggest this may be the case.

Shopped in the Powerplay in Hereford in the past. nice little shop with some CDs you wouldn't find stocked in places like HMV and a decent sale area. Didn't know they had a website untill now. Shame its gone.
  • MayContainNuts ? Seems to still be up and running at the moment, as is the checkout on - not sure I'd risk buying anything until I was completely sure, though!

Having worked for this company, I hope they go down in fucking flames. The guy who runs it is a massive prick who deserves to have the smug smile wiped off his perma-tanned face.

Inversely, I didn't know PowerPlay had a physical presence, I thought they were on-line only, I've bought from them in the past when they've had bargains, not for at least a year though.

I heard that the lease was up on the Hereford store and they decided not to renew as store only just breaking even. River island moving into there and the empty store next door.

River Island has been closed since the great hereford fire this year!

[...] Bitterwallet reported that entertainment retailer PowerPlay Direct may have gone into administration following reports of their website shutting down and the closure of some high street [...]

I thought they'd shut most of the stores a while back, quite surprised that some of the stores were still open.I used to work for the company too and can back up Jonny's comment about the owner being a massive tool.

POWERPLAY IS NOT IN ADMINISTRATION. For anyone who know about the company they will understand it is a multi million pound company which has many aspects to the business including retail and the website. As mentioned above the lease was due for renewal on the Hereford store and considering the current economic climate and the opening of a HMV opposite the site it wasn't deemed as a viable business option. As for the website I think it's fair to say compared to it's competitors it want the best looking/most efficient site and so didn't reflect as well on the whole company. I think it's totally out of order to publish an article like this with no actual evidence and although I may understand the frustration of former employees re the owner I think it's important to remember that across the business Powerplay employs thousands of people who would be out of work if administration was true. The store in Leicester is performing well and I think it's important for people to support their local indie

If they are not in administration Helena, then why is their website " experiencing difficulties" still down today, 03/05/2011? Come on Helena, grow up, no multi-million pound company will alow their website to go down for more than an hour or two. It appears that last year I may have been taken for £100 by them unless somebody has cloned my account.. P.S. I wonder what part of the world Paul (Jan 5th) comes from, he certainly doesn't speak English!
