Deathwatch - Homeform collapses, takes Moben money with it

7 July 2011

retail deathwatchHomeform isn't a name you'll necessarily know, but you'll recognise the brands they own -  Moben, Kitchens Direct, Sharps Bedrooms and Dolphin. If you've recently paid up for a new kitchen or bathroom from any of them, it may not be getting fitted just yet - the parent company has gone into administration and over 550 employees have been made redundant.

The administrators have said that 453 customers who paid cash deposits will lose a total of £1.5 million. Those who used cards or finance agreements should be protected and should contact the provider or the customer helpline on 0800 840 0118. Not all Homeform customers will be affected - Sharps Bedrooms has already been sold, so all orders will still be fulfilled.

The glimmer of good news is that any customers who have had goods delivered but whose fitting has not been completed are due to be contacted in the next five to 10 days to arrange to have their fitting completed.

£1.5M in deposits for 453 purchases - that's over £3,300 each. Why do people pay cash for such large purchases these days?
