Deathwatch: Curtains for Habitat?
It looks like another famous brand name could be about to hit the buffers and it’s the iconic Habitat. Home Retail Group are in talks about acquiring three of the company’s flagship stores and using the Habitat name within their Homebase stores.
As for the rest of the Habitat chain, well frankly, it could be curtains. Lovely curtains probably. That could mean the closure of 30 stores and the loss of as many as 900 jobs.
Habitat has been around since it was set up by Sir Terence Conran in 1964 but it recently fell into the hands of the Kamprad family, “heirs to the Ikea fortune” according to the Daily Mail. They passed it on Hilco, who had a hand in the death of MFI and are pretty good at this sort of thing.
Home Retail would look to add Habitat to the Schreiber and Hygena brand names that they have previously bought and added to their Homebase portfolio. Will you miss Habitat? What’s it like in there? We’ve genuinely never been in. Sorry.
UPDATE KLAXON: Home Retail Group have bought the Habitat brand for £24.5 million but as expected, the rest of the company will go into administration.
