Currys is back in Black in Birmingham, but what is it?

1 December 2010

Bitterwallet - Currys Black Dixons Retail Group
"An exciting new shopping experience is coming to Birmingham," says the mysterious email sent to subscribers on the Currys mailing list.

"That'll be a first," cries Birmingham.

There's no other information available as to what Dixons Retail are up to, and we can't find any information online. The only clue is a graphic that may or may not suggest the Bullring is involved. Will Black signify a belated Thanksgiving sale, the colour of a Currys employee's wilted soul - or a new upscale gadget store, which would be our best guess?

The email promises we'll find out in 48 hours - so on Saturday, then. Whistleblowers, please point your emails to [email protected]

UPDATE - a self-proclaimed "black-souled minion" has emailed Bitterwallet to tell us: "Birmingham, Woking and Tottenham Court Road megastores are currently undergoing a massive revamp, both the stores themselves and the ranges they carry as part of a trial. They are colloquially known as 'future stores' as it's believed they will be a look at the future of electronic retailing!"

they just opened one in Oldham, its basically Currys version of Apple with over friendly staff...
  • Mark
What is it called? Also didn't they close up in Bullring not long ago?!
  • Boris
Perhaps a whole new approach to selling products.

    > its basically Currys version of Apple with over friendly staff… Ooh look, I've just died and gone to hell.

It's next to the new Barclay's opposite the Pavillions, it's nothing to do with the Bullring, at least no further than the staff from the Currys in there being moved over. My friend works part time for them and he's been all around the country training recently.

Its just a Currys but in a psh outfit. Wouldnt sell me an internet radio which was on offer at a great price unless I bought the overpriced warrenty. Even the manager wouldnt budge other then to knock a fiver off the whole package. AVOID!

Ridiculous, I have been there and it is almost impossible to spend money. Shop assistants are bothering you all the time. The problem is that when you ask questions they are totally ignorant about what they sell. if then you ask to try something, a camera for example, there is no battery in and nothing can be done. Why do we have to cope with these shops? What is the point if I can buy the same products on the web for less? Honestly, I don't mind spending a bit more if I get expert advice and a chance to test. But this is a joke.
