Commercial Break: Stupid Kents

21 April 2009

Last week, vile French laws led to a picture of Jacques Tati’s classic Monsieur Hulot appearing on a billboard ad with a stupid yellow windmill in his mouth instead of his traditional pipe.

The world wasn’t always like this though. Here’s a vintage advert for Kent cigarettes complete with cartoon characters, jaunty music and a smattering of racial stereotyping. Hard to tell the difference between this and an ad for sweets. Ciggies that are good enough for yer kids!

Can I just say what a comfort to discover someone who actually understands what they are talking about online. You certainly understand how to bring a problem to light and make it important. A lot more people really need to look at this and understand this side of your story. I can't believe you aren't more popular because you definitely have the gift.

What do you think?
