Commercial Break: Peggy's gone but Bingo Babs is here!

13 September 2010

If you’re an Eastenders fan, you’ll be mourning the disappearance from Albert Square of Peggy Mitchell, the peroxide goblin of Albert Square, who like so many others in that weird little part of London, walked off into the sunset without so much as a suitcase of clean pants last week.

Her pub had burned down, her son had turned into TV’s most spectacular crack addict of all time, and, oh yes, her pub had burned down, torched by her son, TV’s most spectacular crack addict of all time. Or so we gleaned.

But do not mourn no longer. She has not gone. Within an hour of Peggy Mitchell leaving Eastenders, Barbara Windsor was BACK ON OUR SCREENS, as the Bingo Queen for Jackpot Joy.

It’s a radical departure for the veteran star – all it needs is for her bra to fly off, Carry On-style. Um, perhaps not.

Wow, that impish giggle she used to do in Carry On films is now a mind-searingly terrifying cackle. The first time I watched that, I was expecting her and Jack the Ripper (or whoever he's meant to be) to set the dogs on the poor rubes they've roped into appearing in the ad.

So now all I have to to is flick over from thieving BBC to a commercial channel to see her? Sweet!
