Commercial Break: Commuters just about grasp concept of fun

18 June 2010

Volkwagen are fond of their viral ads. Last year, they scored a huge hit when they took a staircase in a Stockholm metro station and turned it into a giant piano keyboard, tickling the fun bones of hundreds of commuters who got to tickle some ivories instead of just trudging up some steps like on every other day.

Now VW have done it again, and transformed another well-used staircase, in Berlin’s Alexanderplatz. Only this time, they’ve added a big slide. Who amongst us could possibly resist having a go on THAT? And how have humans got it so wrong by not having slides everywhere we could possibly put them?

The clip has had 200,000 views in a week, so as a viral ad, it’s probably working. But it’s got a long way to go before it catches up with it’s predecessor (which you can see below) – it’s racked up over 12 million views to date.

After watching stuff like this, I don't want a car, I want a slide. It's a shame the crash mats take up half the stairs.
