A hard bargain? 1 in 3 Argos sale televisions used to cost less

12 January 2009

We told you last week how a high street sale doesn't necessarily guarantee a saving - the law allows a certain degree of flexibility on how price comparisons are advertised. Argos is a prime example; we highlighted items that were part of their clearance sale that were in fact cheaper before the sale started.

How many items in the current clearance have previously been available for less than the current sale price? HUKD member antj87 trawled through the Home Entertainment section of the Argos website, and found nine of the 52 items were previously available for less, and a closer look reveals that one in three of the clearance televisions were sold for less before the sale:

We know there's little point crying over spilt milk, and unless you're knocking up a quantum leap accelerator in the garage, there's little chance of travelling back in time and snapping up the cheaper bargain. Just remember that a sales doesn't guarantee cheaper products and more importantly, if a product was recently on sale for the lower price, another retailer might still be selling it for that price, so always shop around.

I agree you've got to make more consideration to your audience. At least Argos state fairly clearly what price the televisions were previously. I welcome that.

Who in the name of Holy Fuck would buy a Bush branded product? "Hello, I'd like to buy a really cheap nasty TV please." "Certainly sir, do you have any idea as to what you'd like?" "I'm looking for something with no styling that looks as though it was designed by a blind, quadriplegic 2 year old" "We have plenty of those sir, a bit more specific perhaps?" "Hmmm, I'm looking for something that will break down at least twice a year." "A little bit more specific?" "Possibly something to get the excitement back in my life, one that will spontaneously erupt into flames and burn my family to death if they’re not quick enough off the mark?" "Ahhh, You'll be after a Bush then, what size...."

@Bob "Margaret! Margaret!!" "YES!" "Have we got any Cheap Nasty Tv's with no styling that looks as though it was designed by a blind, quadriplegic 2 year old, that will break down at least twice a year to get the excitement back in my life and one that will spontaneously erupt into flames and burn my family to death if they’re not quick enough off the mark?" "How about the Bush one?" "Oooh, Weve got a Bush One!" "Ok, but I need a Black & White 25¾" Widescreen One with 792u HD Resolution"

I know it's difficult, but when dealing with the Argos catalogue (or any other online or catalogue retailer for that matter) it's easy to get sucked in by a cash discount or percentage saving. Savvy consumers need to look beyond the headline grabbing offers and decide if the asking price is truly good value for money. Sites like HUKD make it tempting for some consumers, who aren't the sharpest tool in the box, to buy something just because the saving makes it look like a good deal, when in reality it isn't.

Best info. They must be something best. Thanks

In this great design of things you actually get a B- for hard work. Where you actually misplaced everybody was first in the facts. As as the maxim goes, details make or break the argument.. And it couldn't be more accurate right here. Having said that, allow me reveal to you just what exactly did deliver the results. Your authoring is certainly very convincing which is probably why I am making the effort to comment. I do not really make it a regular habit of doing that. 2nd, despite the fact that I can certainly notice the jumps in reasoning you come up with, I am definitely not confident of exactly how you appear to unite your ideas which in turn help to make the conclusion. For right now I will, no doubt yield to your position however hope in the foreseeable future you actually connect the dots much better.
