SSE the latest energy company to hike up prices

21 July 2011

Screen shot 2011-07-21 at 07.42.43 Here we go again – SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy) are the latest gang of bullies to announce a hefty price hike, with an average of 18% going on to the price of gas and 11% added on to customer’s electricity bills.

The price rises will take place on 14th September and they follow in the footsteps of British Gas and Scottish Power over the past six weeks. Obviously, SSE have blamed the increased wholesale costs of raw energy and we’re all rolling our eyes in dismay. Ofgem will no doubt threaten to do something about it and we’ll roll our eyes again and someone will cough ‘cartel’ under their breath.

SSE have said that their prices won’t be rising again before August 2012, but it’s now looking as though getting a fixed price deal with an energy provider could be your best bet, if you don’t want to play Russian roulette with these assorted bandits. Or is that what they WANT you to do? Just don’t put your head in the gas oven – there’s a strong chance that you can’t afford it.
