It’s been in the offing for a while now but British Gas have finally announced their latest price rises – and as expected, they’re monstrous.

They have just announced that gas prices will shortly go up by 18 per cent, with electricity prices rising by 16 per cent from August 18th. It’s being reported that the annual average bill will rise by £190 to £1219, and that’s with direct debit discount taken into account.

As you'd expect, they have blamed the rise in the increasing wholesale price of gas, which it said had gone up by 30% since last year. The rises follow a recent similar price hike from ScottishPower – wonder who’ll be next...

EDIT - The MD Services and Commercial at British Gas has just appeared on Sky News and told consumers they can email him direct - and expect a personal reply. Unlikely, but off you go then - [email protected]

falling wages, increasing tax burden, increasing inflation, increasing fuel prices - and now increasing energy prices at home. Wonder when we'll get a break...

With the current economic climate my pension is worth less than before and I am sorry to say that you mugs ooops sorry loyal customers will have to pay for it! Alternatively move to a sunnier climate where no heating is required.

Did you mean £219? BFN, fp.
