The new Playstation phone is here! Soon! Probably!

Bitterwallet - new Sony playstation phone

Several weeks ago, Bitterwallet exclusively revealed a photo of the new Sony Playstation phone. The only two issues with our dazzling exclusive were that it wasn't exclusive at all - we nobbled it from Engadget - and it turned out to be a fake anyway. But apart from that, we were bang on the money.

Moving on, it's looking likely a Playstation phone really is in development - and that it could be launched as early as February.

While he may be playing at being the industry equivalent of a cocktease, Sony Ericsson Chief Executive Bert Nordberg told the Wall Street Journal that the company "is at work on a smartphone that would take advantage of Sony's experience in developing the PlayStation Portable videogame device."

If that wasn't enough of a clear indication, Nordberg goes on to rattle off a list of soundbites that'll no doubt have fanbois moist in the gussets:

"There's a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere... Sony has an extremely strong offering in the gaming market, and that's very interesting."

"Sony is of course a very strong brand, and why shouldn't we use that? Gaming, including content, is a very interesting proposition."

Nordberg is also quoted has saying Sony Ericcson will be making a major announcement in relation to whatever-it-is-he's-talking-about in February - at Mobile World Congress, the global expo where major products are showcased.

So there'll be a Playstation phone on the way in 2011, right? No doubt about it, surely?

Is it just me who can't take a Nordberg seriously? So, are we looking at the new N-Gage then ?

Way it should be done: Playstation branded android phone presents the minimum specs a handset needs to be to run 'PSP' apps regardless of brand of the phone. Android gets a massive boost as a gaming platform and Sony get a big influx of cash; clinking champagne glasses and pats on the back all round. Way it will actually be done: Sony will lock up the games to only the Playstation phone which will sell about three. Some Japanese business types will weep and commit Seppuku.

Personally, I'm gearing up for a full-on partial hit. Knowing SE, they'll make a product that will have bags of potential on paper... but I'm sure they'll find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

I think Sony will end up releasing 2 Playstation Portable models for 2011. February will see the PlayStation Phone at MWC with a potential Easter launch. It will set a (low) standard in Android gaming as new phones in '11 will be dual core. This will possibly to keep the cost down to below £250 on PAYG. They may follow the Apple model depending on the sucess of the PSP Phone by releasing a new model each year. Sony may announce a SDK which allows PlayStation Minis to run cross platform on Android and the PSP. It goes for Apple's casual gaming market, but also has a discreet gaming controller which is the frustration of many gamers on iOS devices. I don't think this is the new N Gage as Sony has got the design right. Where as Nokia had the controller on the face of the phone, the controls on the PSP phone slide out like most of the HTC keyboard handsets do. Summer/September will see the announcement of the PSP2 - A more graphic intensive portable which Sony will claim to have as much power as a current gen console. This will be pitched against the Nintendo 3DS and launched in time for Christmas 2011.
