Cold calls still enraging loads of us

“Briiing briiing! Hello, who is this? Hello? HELLO? Why won’t you speak to me? Gaaaaaaaahhhhhh!”

That’s the type of mini-breakdown that many of us suffer from every day thanks to cold calls to our beloved telephonular systems, with ‘silent calls’ the most annoying of all. A new study by consumer champions Which! has revealed that Britons receive an average of six cold calls every month, with 32% of them being silent calls.

Which! say that 75% of those surveyed want such calls banned and that 60% hung up on cold callers right from the outset.

If you’re sick and tired of cold calls infiltrating your telephonular system, you could do a lot worse than register with the Telephone Preference Service. You can also find out just who is responsible for silent calls at Who Calls Me?

Ceri Stanaway of Which! also said: “Reputable businesses should stop making sales calls to you if you ask to be removed from their contact database, but if that doesn't work you should report the company to the information commissioner's office or Ofcom. Scam callers are more difficult to tackle, but start by screening your calls and if you do get a scam call, record as much information as you can – the name of the company and its phone number – and report it to your phone provider or to Consumer Direct."

I've been with the TPS for a few years now and it does cut down the number of calls you get. Some of those automated ones still get through and you do get people saying sorry when you mention you're with the TPS. The annoying ones are when you mention the TPS and they say "well, you're on our database so it's not a cold call"...."I don't care if i'm on your database, goodbye!"

Also with TPS and if anything it's gotten worse.

@ Andrew..u just wrote down a cold call u total idiot..so stop spamming the boards and go away!
  • HangUp
I looked at "who calls me". Who is stupid enough to entertain these bozos anyway? I mean, just hang up! Or, if you have Caller ID, ignore all numbers you do not know (International, Caller Withheld). We get them all the time and we are on TPS. If its family or important, they will leave a message. I mean really, don't waste your breath. I also get lots of automated robots call my work number. Just hang up. very annoying but there is NOTHING you can do.

If they do a silent call or cold call on me, I answer with a silent answer. Just say nothing. They soon hang up.

I followed pottsuk's advice and talked dirty to them. It was only after I'd ripped my own cock off that I realised that this strategy wasn't the best for the automated calls.

If you have time, just keep saying YES to every line/comment/question. After the 25th 'yes' they realise you are taking the mickey ang go away. Try it ! It works. I dont't have time so when the speel starts - anounce 'no canvassers' hang up and dial 14258**. That bars them - even witheld and now international calls. It's called 'Choose to Refuse' and BT put it on for a nominal fee. The TPS organisation is a waste of time. If you report an offender they don't want to know. Their staff play golf all day. PS I telephone canvass for a living and make a lot of money out of a genuine business. It's a free world (so far) to do so. Stupid and naive people will always get ripped off whatever legislation is brought in. PPS On a differnet note - I know how to get the number of a 'witheld' caller. If you are interest in that leave message on this site with a contact details and I'll get back to oyou. It will cost you a donation to my firm's charity fund.
