Either Wowcher or Shamballa isn't dealing in the truth

8 February 2012

2921605 WOWCHER! That’s what we’re all meant to shout all the time, or at least according to the advert for, erm, Wowcher, one of the latest in a rash of online daily deal companies. But when it comes to a recent deal that they plugged with jewellery company Shamballa, avid Bitterwallet reader Emily has been saying ‘WOAH THERE, WHERE’S MY STUFF? Instead.

Emily ordered a Shamballa bracelet through Wowcher (part of DMGT, along with the Daily Mail) before Christmas and has been chasing up its whereabouts ever since. Wowcher have finally offered her a refund along with the postage, saying:

"As you are aware, Shamballa-UK have failed to deliver your bracelet. Despite assurances from the merchant, they have been unable to stock the bracelet as advertised on the Wowcher website.

We are sincerely sorry for the inconvenience and frustration that this must have caused you. Once again, please accept our apologies for this merchant’s failure to meet his obligations."

logo12Which all seems fair enough, if a bit disappointing. A slap on the wrist for Shamballa then. Or is it? Emily has also been in direct contact with Shamballa and seems to be getting a different story from the horse’s mouth itself. They tell her...

"We are disappointed to inform you that Wowcher have not forwarded Shamballa-UK with your money for your bracelet. Subsequently, we are unable to dispatch your order and therefore your order has been cancelled.

Please note that we have tried our best to fulfil your order."

So it looks as if someone is telling porky pies, but who? Have any of you had troublesome dealings with either Wowcher or Shamballa? Let us know so that we can decide which of them we trust the least. Perhaps this is one that the lawyers will have to sort out 0ut - we'll let you know as soon as a winner has been declared.

Oh, and if any of you can make nice bracelets, do you fancy knocking one together and sending it to us so that we can forward it to Emily? THE POOR GIRL'S GOT NOTHING ON HER WRIST FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!

In other news, people that use Groupon, Wowcher, Living Social and all the other multitudes of similar sites that use the same business model still have a customer base that doesn't get that they're being ripped off. If any of their customer is reading, would you be interested in some dirt cheap Tiffany jewellery?
  • Dick
I can give her a pearl necklace if she wants.
  • zeddy
@Dick: I assume you have had sight of your customer. If you haven't, can you be sure that you can fulfil the order?
  • Cutter
Why is Emily not an avid reader then?
  • Brad
I dont think ive ever read or met anyone with anything positive to say about these daily deal firms, either the company who is the go between are so incompetent at anything that people have to fight tooth and nail to get money back or the company's that the deal is for just make it such a pain in the arse with so many conditions attached that its not worth it.
  • Dick
@Zeddy - I have a blindfold. Either she can wear or, or I can.

Hey, where is this Shambhala place? I've been walking through fucking snow and climbing dangerous fucking walls for ages looking for a way in. I even got fucked up by some evil snowman bastard (but I blew his brians out so the joke's on him). Did you say I need some kind of magic necklace to go with the dagger thingy?
  • Evil B.
Looks like someone blew your 'brians' out too Nathan.

I would very much like to find an address or phone number for shamballa-uk. Although I have received 2 bracelets, which were meant to be Xmas gifts but didn't arrive until way after, when they did eventually come, they were sent in a jiffy bag with the bracelets wrapped in cellophane. Have been on their website and left 2 messages asking whether they would be able to supply some form of boxes so that the bracelets can be given as gifts, but not had any response whatsoever. Not very good customer service, so anyone who has contact details for shamballa-uk please let me know. Cheers

@Honest Jon Poor form to tar everyone with the same brush; I purchased Dr Who experience tickets for my 3 boys from Moneysupermarket local deals and got exactly what I paid for. As for the story of shambles-uk.co.uk has anyone looked at the contact shambles page - cannot understand why people would every go near this firm with their credit card: Contact Shamballa-UK not yet set NOT SET not yet set

@Brad I agree that a lot of the daily deals are guff, but if you don't just look at the headline %off and make impulse purchases then there are some good deals. We got a 6wk membership in a posh gym for £12 which has been great. Some of the vouchers for M&S, Lovefilm, HMV have been excellent buys too. There are a lot of non-deals, and this Shambles-uk one is clearly a bit dodgy but half the problem is that morons don't read the small print and commit to something that they're going to struggle to get like '7 nights in Majorca for a fiver', then they moan that the flights weren't included, or they can't book for half-term. Stupid people deserve all they get.
  • Andy
I don't blame Shamballa-Uk at all. If Wowcher witheld the money to pay Shamballa-uk, why would they send the products out? I run a small online business and I would never consider sending a product out that hasn't been paid for. I've used a similar site to sell products before. They are a pain in the Arsenal to get money out of. One minute it's being paid tomorrow, the next minute it should arrive next week. These daily deal sites have ruined so many businesses and it looks like they may have ruined another. STAY AWAY FROM THEM BUSINESS OWNERS.

You know how in their advert, they go "wowcher...wowcher...wowcher - what will make you say wowcher?" The answer I always shout back at the tv is "stop saying fucking wowcher."

As soon as these voucher companies see things not going to plan, they will get out while they are in profit and point the finger at the supplier. Sadly this is business. The most powerful company always wins... and with Wowcher being owned by the daily mail, it's likely they have some above average solicitors!
  • Nick
Andy, Wowcher was in fact the first online daily deal site in the UK, started in December 2010. I owned it and sold it to DMGT last march. The simple fact is this; In order to protect the buying public it is necessary for all goods and services to be provided by the merchants BEFORE they get paid. It has to be this way because if the goods or services are not provided Wowcher and other deal sites must refund the money to the customer as they took it in the first place. Shamballa admit in their mail that they have not sent out the bracelet so why they expect to have been paid yet baffles me. As Wowcher are refunding any customers that did not get their goods there is clearly no grounds to distrust them and your comments are very ill-informed
  • not T.
@ Nick You got your bracelet then. Refunds don't equal trust, if you expect something a refund after lots of emails is not the way to gain a customers (or anyone else's) trust. Take your rose tinted glasses of, your creation is being dragged through the mud and now you have the money nmbut no control.
  • Robert
WTF. Why the hell would a company send out goods without being paid. Seems pretty logical to me, get paid for the goods, then ship them out. These online deals sites are destroying so many small companies. They should be banned!

Thankyou Andy for covering this story. Please see this link (copy & paste) i42.tinypic.com/a9o8rd.jpg This is a photo of the reserved stock from the Wowcher deal that we were unable to send due to Wowcher withholding payment for customers that have redeemed. If any disappointed customers who have been refunded by Wowcher are reading and would like to purchase direct from us for the same price, please use coupon code SHAMB1963 and copy and paste the link below into your web browser. tinyurl.com/shamballaoffer This offer will expire 29th February 2012. I'm desperately looking for a contact number for Shamballa-uk.co.uk. I purchased £75 worth of goodies in February and have still not received the products. I have emailed them numorous times to have very vague responses but no resolution to my query. For a company not to have a contact number on their website is really worrying. Please help!
