Around £3.7 billion of benefits is going unclaimed by pensioners each year. It isn't a huge leap of the imagination to think that nana and granddad might not know about such things and, even if they do, don't really want to cause a fuss and mither anyone about it.
Well, you can help.
According to research by the charity Independent Age, who offer help and advice to older people, they say that two fifths of people haven't ever checked to see if they are eligible for help, with things like Pension Credit. Around half have no idea that, if they live alone, they can get 25% off their Council Tax, too.
The charity has crunched the numbers, and they say that people are missing out on £2,100 per, which is £41 per week. Not to be sniffed at. That's being able to keep the heating on, when it gets cold, amount of money.
If an older person gets Pension Credit, it can free up a lot of other financial help as well, so it is well worth looking into.
The charity has launched a free Moneywise advice guide for older people, their families and carers, which gives tips on how to make the most out of older people's income.
The site itself is struggling with an influx of traffic at the moment, so keep trying. If you'd prefer, you can call them on 0800 319 6789, and they'll send you a guide or can arrange for a free benefits check.
Don't let grandpa and grandma be too proud to have a look into this. You can make the call for them and help them out, and make their lives a little easier.
