Worst Company of 2010: Orange v TalkTalk

14 December 2010

wcb-2010-medalAnd so it begins... the voting for our Worst Company In Britain 2010 award that is, not the Rapture or anything truly massive. But still, our annual hate-fest is fairly massive so, get your clicky-fingers poised and start voting.

We’ve whittled your nominations down to the final 16 and the knockout stage begins now. You’ve got until midnight tonight to tell us which you find the least agreeable out of telecoms giants Orange or TalkTalk.

Why not justify your choice in the comments box below as well? It’s good to rant you know. Plus, pop back later for the SECOND showdown of the day a little bit later on.

Orange, just because I like talk talk

Orange weren't that bad when I dealt with them on the recent San Fran mobile deal so TakTak lose by default

Orange - I paid for my mobile broadband contract a year in advance after taking it out. Orange then proceeded to charge me £3.50/month for not paying by direct debit despite me not owing them anything!

Talk Talk, because they keep sending me text messages saying they've sent out an engineer and fixed the problem when they've done nothing. 3 months now.

Talk Orange just because I like Talk?

i voted talktalk, and then accidently voted talktalk again. i didn't realise you could vote twice and didn't believe that it actually happened, so i voted talktalk a 3rd time just to check - the vote went through. i will vote orange twice just to make things fair. is there a may to disable multiple votes? as i write this i think to myself "surely there's nobody out there with a hatred for a company so strong that they will re-vote 1000 times to ensure victory?". how naive indeed....

Orange for me, here's the short version why: Tried to order a phone for the missus, had to use my card to put the down payment as they wouldn't accept her card type. Got told that the account would have to be opened in my name initially (because it's my card being used); that it's completely normal and the account could be swapped over in a week. Long story short it took two months to swap over, not a week (lie number one). Four months later was sent a letter by Debt Company X threatening me with court action for not paying my bill and ignoring the correspondence (lie number two). Two weeks worth of phone calls later being treated as a fraud the court action is stopped (I had to ring the debt collectors in the end and prove Orange's mistake). Again was told by Orange not to worry and that everything is sorted, it was all an innocent 'computer mistake' (lie number three). Fast forward three months, apply for a mortgage and I'm rejected because my credit report has a entry with unpaid bills/ignored correspondence/threatened court action from a mobile phone company. After working out this is the fallout from their original balls-up I had another two weeks worth of phone calls trying to get them to sort it, I heard the phrase "They're not a customer facing department" more times than anyone should hear in their lifetime. I was even told by one 'non-UK located' rep "You will have to ring back when it's not busy, I have proper Orange customers to deal with right now, not petty people who refuse to pay their bill" *clunk*. Finally got through to the call centre in Scotland, was promised again that everything was sorted. The icing on the cake was their refusal to pay for the cost of the credit report to make sure everything had been cleared (and before you ask I've already used my 'free' report a year before to make sure my credit was OK ready for getting the mortgage). The cost was only £6.99! Their response was (through email) - "It is your choice to pay for the credit report and check it. We have rectified the issue so we don't deem it necessary to pay for it." I didn't ask for anything before then as compensation, only for them to pay for the report that I needed because of their mistake. Next time I'm going for a company that's not as bad, I know none are brilliant but Orange have really done a number this time. I even told a friend of mine who works in an Orange shop, he smiled and said "That's nothing, I've not been paid in two months. 'Computer error' I keep being told". 10/10 Orange you useless dickheads.

@ will "is there a may to disable multiple votes?" Where there's a Will there's a way

Tough one. I was going to vote Orange because yesterday my experience with their Indian call centre made my blood boil - got fobbed off once and then the next time I phoned up the guy gave me some bull about how his computer was slow and he'd phone me back once it was loaded up... 'course he didn't phone back! However, I got through to an English call centre and got the issue (phone needs replacing) sorted in about 3 minutes! Talk Talk on the other hand get my vote for their stupid online system where you have to enter your phone number to get a speculative speed test for internet in your street. And of course, they use it to besiege you with phone calls. A friend put "don't call me you twats" as his name and hasn't heard anything so I guess that might be worth trying.

"Fast forward three months, apply for a mortgage and I’m rejected because my credit report has a entry with unpaid bills/ignored correspondence/threatened court action from a mobile phone company. " Sure about that? Only a proper CCJ should appear on there, not a record of some letters sent by an private company.

Orange. They were shit when they had English call centres, goodness knows what they're like now. They pissed me off about 10 years ago, and I haven't forgotten how wank they were. Asked me to send in proof of my identity (ie passport) cause some dickhead on the phone spelled my name wrong, instead of just correcting it. Tossers.

Talk talk because I am orange.

talk talk as their door to door sales man doesn't understand the phrase - 'I am in the middle of a 12 month contract'.
  • Nobby
I don't use either, but voting for Orange as I prefer bananas.

I had a really bad time with Orange, but I voted TalkTalk for the way they treated my granddad. Basically, they called him constantly. Like, proper constantly, to the point that they would ring straight back after he put the phone down on him, repeatedly. My granddad is 86. In the end, he decidedthe only way to stop the calls was to go with them, and their service has been abysmal since. Personally, I hope their building catches fire with them all trapped inside. They're utter scum.
