Is your house broke? Tesco will send someone to fix it

Bitterwallet - Tesco Extra fined for rat infestationTesco, ultimately, would like to take over the entire world. They can help you with your shopping, car-insurance, banking, pharmaceutical drugs, electrical good, insurance... and now the are moving into home repairs and selling you the services of handymen who can come 'round and sort your plumbing out or kill rats with gigantic guns.

They're trialling this new range of services - under the banner of Tesco Home Services - at their store in Swindon, Wiltshire.

The supermarket is teaming up with local tradesmen who'll do the work, but only after they've passed an "accreditation" process. Customers ring a central number and the work is divvied up with Tesco taking a cut of the fees. Tesco's roster of tradesmen will cover building, glazing, locks, heating, roofing, drainage and even IT support.

Rob Brown, home services director, told The Sun: "We are giving people in Swindon the confidence that what they will receive will be good value and reliable."

Some will argue that this is a retail giant monopolising the market, while others will no doubt see this as a way of getting more work in.

    Seems like a fair enough service tbh, although dubious about the "accreditation" process. Yes, Yellow Pages does the same thing I guess, but this would ultimarelt save the consumer time (although I don't know if it will save money...) In fact, now that I've thought about it more than a nanosecond, there are quite a few issues, particularly when it comes to the price/value for money etc. Do you receive quotes and pick your favourite? Similar to the trade website? Hmmmmmz

    If the tradesmen are anything like Tesco staff you wouldn't want them round for fear of them drooling on your carpet.

    I would imagine that you would have some comeback via Tesco if the work was not up to standard. If you are in a position where you dont know a tradesman or cant get recommendations from friends, etc. then this sounds like a safe way to find someone competent - more so than just picking a name from the yellow pages anyway. Of course the legions of tesco haters will probably not see it that way.

    Tesco needs to fuck off, it really is that simple.

    I really want Tesco to re-open all the closed down pubs. Complete with in-store radio station. Just imagine the low prices, Club Card Points, BOGOF's, and trollies for the trollied students. :>}}

    Christ, can our not-elected government do something about these bellends before they cause the ruin of every other business ever in the UK? I'm not looking forward to the days where the only place to get goods and services is Tesco.
