Ikea: global source for furniture hacks

8 October 2008

The growing secret about Ikea is that it offers a global repository for furniture hack material. It's cheap, it's general cheerful, and the materials used are often surprisingly solid. As a source for hacking and modding furniture it has the unique characteristic of being globally homogeneous. That Billy bookcase is going to be exactly the same whether you are in Dubai or Anchorage. If everyone just assembled their Ikea flatpack as is that would be a depressing thought but the rise of modding anything has made Ikea's homegrown future bright... for just one example check out this amazing scalable lamp design on Instructables.

One of the blogs at the source of the Ikea hacking movement is Ikeahacker @ blogspot. Take a look at it for more practical ideas on what you can do with Ikea raw materials :)
