E.on announce hefty energy price rise

11 January 2011

EON_UK_RGBIt’s bad news today if you’re an E.on energy customer – prices are set to significantly rise from 4th February, with a 9% increase in electricity prices and a 3% rise in the cost of your gas.

Announcing the price rise, E.on said they had ‘no option’ but to hike up their prices. Frankly, that’s the kind of language a stranded mountaineer would use after having eaten his dead mate as opposed to the kind of thing you’d expect from a company that five months ago recorded a growth in its pre-tax earnings of £352m to £550 million - more than twice the prior-year figure. Still – it’s all just words, innit?

Here are the price rises that have affected UK energy consumers over the past few months…

• Scottish Power: gas up 2%; electricity up 8.9%
• Scottish and Southern Energy: gas up 9.4%
• British Gas: gas and electricity up 7%
• Npower: gas and electricity up 5.1%
• E.On: gas up 3% and electricity up 9% from 4 February

The other major player, EDF, have said there will be no price rise before March 2011, although it’s fair to assume that there’ll be one from them around about then. Meanwhile, industry watchdawg Ofgem are in the process of investigating domestic energy pricing.

Time to throw some more wood on the fire, Britain.

As much as prices have went up, Ive actually just spoke to Scottish power, and my monthly amount has now dropped to £48 a month for Elec and Gas combined instead of the £64 I had been previously paying. Ive probably been getting shafted for the last year...hmmm. Regardless, Ill save some money this side of the year now.

I'm in my 14 day cooling of period as I opted to switch from Scottish Power to EON for a small saving. I'm assuming this now means that I should stay with Scottish Power?

EDF have stopped giving out nectar points - they sent a letter out saying that it was a way of keeping costs down. I presume ontop of this they will raise prices come March\April too but at least this is after the winter.

This is what happens when you privatise. Bring back state-owned utilities and transport in my opinion.

Boy am I glad I went on EDF fixed price plan till 2015 which is what I done before with British Gas in 2005 for five years. In that five years prices almost doubled looks like the same will happen again I don't know why more people go on these fixed price plans when they do them as energy prices are always going to rise now.

Hey it doens't really matter, the world is going to end between December 2012 and April 2013 - we probably won't even need gas and electricity then.

Ah dont worry, we know our friends at OfGem have nothing better to do than abuse over the counter medications and feed their nicotine gum addictions.. I tell you something, I think its all the same company. Look up the word regulations/regulator.. "an official responsible for control and supervision of a particular activity or area of public interest". There is nothing there about them doing anything about it though..
