E.on announce hefty energy price rise
It’s bad news today if you’re an E.on energy customer – prices are set to significantly rise from 4th February, with a 9% increase in electricity prices and a 3% rise in the cost of your gas.
Announcing the price rise, E.on said they had ‘no option’ but to hike up their prices. Frankly, that’s the kind of language a stranded mountaineer would use after having eaten his dead mate as opposed to the kind of thing you’d expect from a company that five months ago recorded a growth in its pre-tax earnings of £352m to £550 million - more than twice the prior-year figure. Still – it’s all just words, innit?
Here are the price rises that have affected UK energy consumers over the past few months…
• Scottish Power: gas up 2%; electricity up 8.9%
• Scottish and Southern Energy: gas up 9.4%
• British Gas: gas and electricity up 7%
• Npower: gas and electricity up 5.1%
• E.On: gas up 3% and electricity up 9% from 4 February
The other major player, EDF, have said there will be no price rise before March 2011, although it’s fair to assume that there’ll be one from them around about then. Meanwhile, industry watchdawg Ofgem are in the process of investigating domestic energy pricing.
Time to throw some more wood on the fire, Britain.
