#CarrierBagGate - House of Fraser and Debenhams ethically charging for paper bags

Screen Shot 2015-11-13 at 10.46.55Another story on carrier bag charges and if you plan to read on, prepare to be OUTRAGED.

When the 5p charge was introduced in October it was supposedly to encourage people to re-use their own bags instead of grabbing more plastic non-compostable bags.

So considering paper bags are recyclable (and Tesco was recently giving these away without charge) there should not be any cost associated with these.

Well, House of Fraser and Debenhams don't agree.

Shoppers in House of Fraser and Debenhams have recently been charged up to 10p per bag when shopping at their stores and so far the response from House of Fraser is that all proceeds will go to charity:

If a shop isn't legally obliged to charge you 5p for a carrier bag, shouldn't the choice to donate to an unnamed charity be your own?

Previously there was a tacit quid pro quo - in return for spending money with you, you'll provide me with a free carrier bag and I'll walk round advertising your business. Now they're effectively charging you to be a mobile billboard. Maybe we ought to start charging them a charitable donation for advertising space.

They mightn't be legally obliged to charge you for a bag but they aren't obliged to give you one for free either. Shops can and will charge for anything they think they can get away with.

Person who can afford £180 for a pair of shoes resents paying 10p for a paper bag shocker!

Spends £180 on shoes and whinges about a 5p bag. First world problems, eh?

Still in Moderation for all my comments why?

Get over it for fucks sake. There wasn't this outrage in Scotland or Ireland or any other country when this came in. Its fucking 5 pence, stop being so wasteful and use one of the dozens of plastic bags you've got under your sink.

" stop being so wasteful and use one of the dozens of plastic bags you’ve got under your sink" Do you think there in an infinite storage of bags in there?. Its not a Tardis

"Do you think there in an infinite storage of bags in there?. Its not a Tardis" No, but we thought you might possibly be able to use a given bag more than once, hence the reason why they were under your sink in the first place. Magically, that way an infinite number of bags is no longer required, you can just have the number you and your household members can usefully hold at once.

Dear Optimistic Tiger, I am with you on this one. And very sorry you are being trolled and getting personal attacks here. Sounds like males, who cannot understand women spending money on shoes. Bet they would not mind if it was spent on beer, hifi's, car exhausts. It is just annoying that there seems no justification for charging for paper bags that advertise the company for free. It is nice to get a sylish bag to take expensive goodies home in. The price of fashion? Chin up luv, walk tall, and dismiss these men as beneath you and not worthy of even eyeing you up on the streets. Dream on mates, you just lost your girl!

" Sounds like males, who cannot understand women spending money on shoes." About right! Now fuck off to the kitchen and make me a sandwich, eh?
