Best Buy launch recruitment drive, promise up to 70 megastores

28 October 2009

Bitterwallet - Best Buy starts recruitingTheir recruitment website launched a little while ago, but today they've kicked into high gear; Best Buy are on the way and they want you, they want you, they want you as a new recruit. The US behemoths have today launched a recruitment drive to find the first of an expected 8,000 UK employees.

The first stores will open in Thurrock and Southampton in the spring of next year, each employing around 100 staff. Best Buy will also be recruiting for their new headquarters in West London and for this building site at Lakeside, which will become an überstore in the near future. They seem pretty serious about getting customer service right from the start - staff will be enrolled in a two month academy programme to learn about the products they're expected to sell.

Best Buy is hoping to open up 70 gigantostores in the UK over the next five years, with the aim of giving DSGi a sound kick up the arse. It can't come soon enough, says us.

    Issue is, they won't train up staff on new products like every other company and within 2 years will be as useless as Comet or PC World
  • yeah
    cue the mass DSGi colleague migration to Best Buy, thinking they're gonna end up getting something better. but it'll probably still be the same: scripted customer service basic wage no recognising a union if the staff belong to one (DSGI don't) hard sell dressed up as 'customer solution'.

    Lakeside = Thurrock

    @ Yeah. Innit. I do wonder if anything is going to change. Here at Bitterwallet towers, they seem to think Best Buy is the answer to their consumer electronics woes, but lets face it, DSGi (Currys, PC World) are no better than Kesa (Comet); John Lewis has a tiny elitist range; the specialists are really only niche retaillers; the supermarkets offer tat and little choice or knowledge. *Holds breath for Best Buy kicking arse* *suffocates*

    a little bit more competition can't be bad ; however they probbaly will take the best PC World etc employees where the new store is close to existing stores....

    The Hedge end southampton store looks almost complete from the outside. Can't wait. (They will beat DSG as long as there is no hard sell on worthless addons.)

    Latest inside info - BB are watching & waiting for the right moment to strike - probably be when DSG are up accepting the 'Golden Turd'.........

    "(They will beat DSG as long as there is no hard sell on worthless addons.)" Pretty much the only way to make money in the business they are in is to sell worthless addons. Margins on laptops, TVs etc are a few percent if that. It'll be the same old warranty (£300)? laptop bag(£30)? dvd-rs (£10)? etc etc

    Unless they can sell 'worthless addons' they'll struggle. As David says, laptops etc have virtually zero margin. Some products may actually be loss-leaders.

    [...] electrical retail industry, taking the fight to the doors of DSGi and John Lewis. They’re recruiting staff, their stores are being built and soon there’ll be more big bargains and outraged customers. [...]
