Live longer- go bananas

5 April 2013

Eating more bananas could prevent thousands of people dying from strokes but if you eat too many crisps, you may as well buy the gravestone now, experts said today.

The great non existent medical banana vs crisps debate has finally been decided, and according to researchers, bananas will protect you from high blood pressure, due to their abundance of potassium. Crisps, however, are full of salt, and will help you die.

The report, published on bmj.com, also revealed that potassium has no effect on kidney function in older people as previously thought, so granny can sit in the corner like a chimp, chowing down on bananas to (literally) her heart's content. The authors also said there was ‘high quality evidence’ that patients with high blood pressure improved when they upped their potassium intake.

Dr Claire Walton from the Stroke Association went bananas about the news, saying: ‘This research suggests that reducing your salt intake and eating more potassium-rich foods such as bananas, dates and spinach could keep your risk down.’

Eat fruit instead of crisps SHOCKER. How did the human race keep going before artery-crushingly obvious surveys like this?

In other news, I've just had a bag of cheese and onion crisps and they were GREAT.

Volume for volume, milk contains almost as much potassium as a banana, orange juice contains the same amount and a baked potato has twice as much. Bananas are over-rated, IMO.

Pretty sure boffins still haven't decided if salt is bad for you or not

I prefer a scientist with a specialism in that particular field. Still, if you want my opinion, salt added to water makes a delicious brine that you can take a bath in too. Woo-woo-woo-woo, etc...

This is great until you go to see your GP and he sends you straight off to the hospital with a raised potassium.... Ho hum.

@Jon B I took your advice and stuffed a banana skin with the same volume of baked potato. Should be a win win but it tasted horrible.
