The great non existent medical banana vs crisps debate has finally been decided, and according to researchers, bananas will protect you from high blood pressure, due to their abundance of potassium. Crisps, however, are full of salt, and will help you die.
The report, published on bmj.com, also revealed that potassium has no effect on kidney function in older people as previously thought, so granny can sit in the corner like a chimp, chowing down on bananas to (literally) her heart's content.The authors also said there was ‘high quality evidence’ that patients with high blood pressure improved when they upped their potassium intake.
Dr Claire Walton from the Stroke Association went bananas about the news, saying: ‘This research suggests that reducing your salt intake and eating more potassium-rich foods such as bananas, dates and spinach could keep your risk down.’
