Commercial Break: Morning campers, I'm Jimmy Dean...
It’s 54 years to the day since brooding Hollywood legend James Dean pegged it, killed in a car smash in California. The car he was driving was a Porsche 550 Spyder, which he had named ‘Little Bastard.’
Seven days before the crash, Dean showed off the car to Alec Guinness, who found the vehicle to be sinister and told Dean: “'If you get in that car, you will be found dead in it by this time next week.” Weird shit there, but it’s an anecdote that can’t have hurt Guinness as he pitched for the role of alien psychic Obi-Wan Kenobi just over two decades later.
In this stylish new ad for Allan Gray Investment, we get a glimpse into what might have become of James Dean if he had lived. It's an idealised view and one that we're not comfortable with – we reckon he’d have thrown it all in and taken a job as a stand up comic in a holiday camp on the English coast.
You can watch this ad and believe whatever you want, but when we watch re-runs of Hi-De-Hi and see the antics of Spike Dixon (pictured) as played by Jeffrey Holland, that’s where we see the legacy of James Dean. What do you think?
