Microsoft - 'banned Xbox users will need to stump up for new consoles'

Bitterwallet - gay people barred from XBOX Live

Following criticism over the recent blocking of hundreds of thousands of Xbox owners from the console’s Live service, Microsoft have come out swinging in retaliation, saying that the banned punters will need to buy new Xbox consoles if they want to be reconnected.

In a stern speech delivered to BBC News, Microsoft said: "Users of banned Xbox consoles can recover their profile to another, unmodified Xbox 360 console to resume their Live service. The banned console will be unable to connect to Xbox Live." Ooof!!

Almost equating piracy to the distribution of heroin to toddlers, Microsoft added: “We believe that even one modified console on the system is one too many.”

The announcement could have been amid as speculation grows that hackers will soon create new mods that will allow the shamed, banned individuals to get back on Xbox Live, which wouldn’t surprise us in the slightest.

  • Jeffrey A.
I bet nobody saw that coming, did they? Merry Christmas, Microsoft sales targets.
  • IfYouCopyMyNameYouAreGay
I would be surprised if a mod came out circumventing xbox live security.
  • Caravan S.
no sympathy for the ones banned because they modded their xbox to play copy games you can still play them just not online stop whinging its not like you weren't warned, its not like its a new thing
  • brian o.
been done hold your hats its comming we found the fix
  • Junkyard
"The announcement could have been amid as speculation grows" Come on, don't keep us in suspense BW - was the announcement amid or not?
    • Andy D.
I can confirm it WAS amid. Don't know what it was amid though. I'm not editing that one - I like how it looks.
  • brian b.
only kidding but i bet techies are franticaly pushing keyboards programming rom chips
  • Klingelton
don't hate me, i'm backing M$ on this one. Just buy the freakin games, then maybe they wouldn't be £50+ on release (R.R.P). bring back the monkey island style code wheel, or the Indiana jones style sheet that wouldn't allow you to photo copy it!! awesome!
  • Matt. S.
I'm being moderated? or this thread?
  • Nigel
I don't see how there can be a workaround. Each XBOX has an ID. When connecting to Live using a modded Xbox MS collected the ID of the console and added it to a banned list. AFAIK these keys can't be re-generated so the only plausible workaround would be to use a key from another Xbox that hasn't been banned (and doesn't want to use Live itself). There will be no free fix.
    Nelson style: HAAAAA HAAAAA
  • Steve
Yeah, I'm with Klingelton on this one, Microsoft have done the right thing here. Let's be clear, they're not bricking consoles, they're stopping them from working on the Xbox Live service. Modded consoles shouldn't be allowed on-line, not just for piracy reasons but because they tend to be used to allow cheating. This is something that damn near killed the PC community not so long ago with aimbots being the norm in most games. If you want to hack your system for playing pirate games then go ahead, just DON'T GO ON-LINE! It's not that hard really and if you can afford to pay for Xbox Live Gold then you can afford to buy your games (or go for a rental service like Lovefilm). Actually that last part is important, there's now a service in the UK that lets you rent unlimited games for less than £11 a month if you only want 1 disc at a time. The console to play them on costs over a hundred quid. If you can realisticly afford the console you can afford the subscription service.
  • Alan C.
and what about people who buy the consoles second hand? I'm guessing that there is no legal recourse for them to get a refund from the person they bought the console from since Live is a service which doesn't come with the console itself?
  • xbox d.
I've been banned.. on the night before MW2 release, and to be honest it wasn't surprising. I avoided several waves of banning before, and was lucky there. I don't blame MS for their actions, it not only is a hit for the guys playing copied games, but also prevent the cheating. Any gamer that plays a game offline on a banned machine will not be able to use their achievements on a live allowed xbox, again preventing cheating. I think MS have been fair. It's not like the machines have been bricked. There are new firmwares coming out that should prevent MS from detecting any future pirate games, and subsequent waves of banning. But circumventing banned machines has stummed even the best teams. Just be careful when buying second hand consoles!
  • Jeffrey A.
@Klingelton I've said it before, and I'll say it again. PS3 has no piracy, yet games are the same price, if not more expensive, than on the 360. So fuck off with your holier than though bollocks of accusing 'pirates' of making your games more expensive. Pig fucker.
  • er...
Nintendo FTW!!1! Although I must admit the only games on the Wii decent enough to play online are only GH, MarioKart and SSB Brawl
  • Gunn
Agree with Jeffrey, they keep using that piracy excuse to keep the games price high! but it is dodgy ground if you pick up a 2nd hand xbox, what a mess this has all caused! would it not be better to unban the console if you pay up or de-mod (if thats even possible). i wondering what will these punters do, will they move onto PS3? or buy another xbox? if its the latter i will never believe MS sales figures as i'll need to adjust a few million for banned consoles.
  • Jon
Bill Gates genuinely gets really wound up by piracy - for good reason, but it is funny anyway ;) True PS3 has no piracy, so why cant Microsoft achieve the same? Also, why do they insist on selling SO many addons. Come on, I really dont need a play and charge kit - just give me a USB cable you scammers!
  • Roy
to be fair most people selling modded consoles state they are modded, buyers are looking for it. This is a load of fuss about nothing, MS have everyright to ban modders from live for life. The Wii homebrew channel or DS R4 carts are bigger news.
  • Roy
and why are people complaining about overpriced games on a hotdeals website? you should never have to buy a game for more than £29.98 if you hang around here, which is what they cost in 1976. Todays money thats about £100?
  • Gunn
Ban the user not the console though. You can remove an R4 card and the DS can be sold on. Would you prefer if you were caught for speeding that they ban the car you were driving from ever been driven again?
  • Jeffrey A.
@Roy - what planet are you from? In 1986 games are £1.99. And sometimes they didn't even work. I remember taking some shit back to the local john menzies (now wh smiths) to get it replaced three times because it crashed instantly everytime I spent five minutes loading the tape. I was gutted. Luckily, the superman jumper my mum bought me instead cheered me up.
  • Marcus S.
Nigel, you just need to alter the keyvault. A very free and easy way to get back online.
  • Matt B.
It wasn't cheating that killed PC games, it was customers being treated like dirty pirates, whether they were or not. The 360 has a hardware fault - a habit of killing discs and making them unreadable. There's no way to get your money back for this - Microsoft consider it to be the user's fault. So a fifty quid game is GONE. It's perfectly reasonable to want to play backups, and moreover it's legal.
  • Matt. S.
Anyone going to slam microsoft over the enviromental effect of this? why not offer an option to have disabled boxes, “fixed” by microsoft and re-enabled. instead of creating even more digital landfill?? Aren’t they violating some sort of WEEE directive?
  • Matt. S.
I give up I can't figure out what keyword my post could possible say that has it stuck in waiting for moderation
    • Andy D.
@Matt. S - might have been 'disabled' or 'violating' or the combination of them both. Not sure.
  • Amanda H.
The monkey island and indiana games were not pirated then? Hang on a minute, so I can rewrite my childhood memories. I seem to remember playing these copied games without the fecking spinning wheel or booklet.
  • Simon W.
Wow finally Microsoft actually got some guts. Lets hope more ISPs start doing the say to those who download and steal music and films. Today everyone makes more money than could ever dreamed of twenty years ago. But everyone , including myself wants to have the latest games, see latest films or music. But we dont want to wait for next episode or play 44 notes instore or wait days for delivered game at 27 online. But that waiting makes appreciate what you have bought. How can spoilt Xbox Modded or PS2 users understand that. Now you do.ha ha ha....Start saving guys and girls, this is just the start reality is now your friend....
  • Fool&hisMoney
This is just a gimmick . A good one I'll grant them that but a gimmick nonetheless. Ooh and MW2 Sucks monkey ass
  • mein c.
attn: everyone who got banned hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
  • Hi O.
This is old news. Microsoft always bring out the ban hammer just before Christmas and play the ole wack-a-mole game... It's possible pick up a RROD console for about £30, repair it, flash the drive and keep gaming. So much for them hoping the pirates will buy a new console to up their sales.
  • Hi O.
If you've been banned, here are two options and it's free!
  • M1FFTY
I think its totally shit, I got MW2 4 days early, A retail version and still got banned, I agree they should ban people thatflash their xboxs, but why ban genuine people who buy the fuckin games, whats the logic in that
  • Brian
Hi, my name is Brian. I own a LEGAL Xbox 360 (plus PS3 & iPhone 3gs) I will spend tomorrow (13-11-09) at home enjoying my games as i am not banned. I have watched Friday The 13th, and will be in bed all day in case anything BAD happens.
  • Jeffrey A.
Good. I have an Xbox. It's shite, but it's legal. Games consoles are sheeite, and anyone who disagrees is an idiot. My PS3, however, is a full multi-media studio (directly out of the box, unlike the Xbollock). Therefore, it urinates all over the Xshaag in every way possible. If you disagree, you're an Xgaay fan-box and therefore don't know what the hell you're talking about. Good day to you, Sir.

  • Klingelton
xbox has it's advantages, as does ps3. they both have disadvantages. let's not turn this into a slagging match over which one is better. i don't think anyone person here could say "i've never copied a game." I remember the long guiltless nights on turrican 2 and fury of the furries (what a game) and i do own an r4 card for my ds (for actually playing backed up games - easier than carting my collection around with me) but it's had the occasional copied game on there. M$ are right. they are not bricking the console for which they would need to give your money back, more preventing you from using it on their network - exactly what you would want to prevent cheaters. cheating never nearly killed pc gaming - it nearly killed cs. there's still people who cheat - they're called the Germans, but the punishments are harsh now - it's no longer an ip ban from that server, it's a steam ban, and who wants to lose their steam account - NOT ME!! @Jeffrey Arser - you're a child, get over yourself. if you own both a ps3 and an xbox, carefully remove you ever enlarging arse from the butt-groove you've created on that sofa, go outside and find yourself some fanny. Boy, you need it!
  • Jeffrey A.
Fucking hell, somebody else remembers fury of the furries. Awesome.
  • Klingelton
what can i say. i'm an old skool gamer!
  • Klingelton
we are part of a dying breed. those who remember the release of lemmings. most are dying of coronaries through such a sedentary lifestyle!
  • Jeffrey A.
Hey, hey, 16k, What does that get you today? You need more than that for a letter, Old skool ram packs were much better...
  • Jeffrey A.
@Klingelton I get more than my fair share, and your fair share put together. The consoles are for relaxing and chilling between social engagements and sex. Don't judge us all by your standards, my young friend.
  • Jeffrey A.
@Jeffrey Arser, Yeah, I don't doubt for a second that you chuck out more than all of ours fair share of knuckle children...
  • mein c.
video game console topic degenerating into insults between manchildren well i fucking never
  • Jeffrey A.
"@Matt. S – might have been ‘disabled’ or ‘violating’ or the combination of them both. Not sure." OK, so if I say that I've been violating disabled people, it would moderate it? Yum.
  • Jeffrey A.
Apparently not, its alright everyone, violating disabled people is fine. Business as usual.
  • bwah h.
My console got banned yesterday. But nevermind I'm going to trade it in at CEX tomorrow! Wahoooooooo
