Aussie consumer watchdog slams Apple over 4G claim

28 March 2012

rotten apple If Apple had advertised their new iPad as having ‘Wi-fi and the ability to cure infertility’ even though it wasn’t capable of curing infertility, we’d all be slightly vexed wouldn’t we? So why has there been so little fuss about the new tablet being advertised as having ‘Wi-fi and 4G’ over here in the UK when it won’t actually work with our forthcoming 4G networks? Dunno – it’s baffling.

Over on the other side of the world, the Australians have been a little bit less forgiving. Their consumer watchdog, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) have kicked right off with the Cupertino gadget-pimps, saying that Apple have misled punters with the 4G description.

In a statement, the ACCC said that Apple have “represented to Australian consumers that the product 'iPad with WiFi + 4G' can, with a SIM card, connect to a 4G mobile data network in Australia, when this is not the case”. They’re also taking Apple to court, alleging its advertising broke four sections of Australian consumer law.

As a result of the brouhaha, Apple are offering refunds to any customers who bought a new iPad, believing that it would work on the Aussie 4G network. No such problem here in the UK, as we barely have a 4G network for it not to work on yet.

Every British working man must let Boris Johnson sort it out. It is only a matter of time before race riots spill blood on our streets.

Our consumer watchdog doesn't give a toss for Apple fanboys.

The UK consumer watchdog probably doesn't even know what 4G is and probably thinks his/her iPad is already using it at blazing speed. Also they have no backbone and wouldn't ever risk being a firm handed as this!

So? Apple owners are cunts anyway.

Why is it baffling? Couldn't you have Mof run down a 'source' to cut and paste? Simply: - The new iPad has LTE 700 & 2100 MHz capability - The UK will use 800MHz for LTE. Or even simpler: - It wont fucking work And IMO your story is wrong. Apple aren't advertising 4G capability here without the everpresent footnote that says '4G LTE is supported only on AT&T and Verizon networks in the US, and on Bell, Rogers and Telus networks in Canada. See your carrier for details.'

Serves 'em right. Apple consumers are fucking gullible idiots.

I'm already working on this problem Important Person. I have a personal relationship (of the non-gay kind) with Steve Jobs and have left him a message. I am sure he will get back to me today and all of this stuff and nonsense will be sorted. I can assure you that Ken Livingstone is far too busy hugging trees and wanking over his newts to bother helping the hard working British consumer like I do.

Problem is in the UK especially is that people see adverts for the iPad etc from all over the world. Yes you see the posters on bus shelters but you also go onto US news sites to see all the latest info. And THERE they say these things. The UK adverts are very careful what they say if you look, Siri being a good example.

Ah, apparently some changes at Apple I was not made aware of. I have decided to solve the problem by by waiting. As there are no 4G networks working in London then there is no problem. Once they are up and running then I am totally certain that my good friend Steve will swap all of the iPods for new ones that do the 4G thing that is clearly very important. I will also arrange a free warm pastie and a convincing apology to anybody inconvenienced. I have heard from a source that Ken will save money by returning London's phone system to 1G except for his private lines.
